Head of Compliance & DPO (SMF16) | Insurance | Hybrid
My client is a specialist insurer that protects professionals across the UK and Ireland. They are established, well regarded in their market and large enough to deal with three regulators: the FCA, the PRA and the Central Bank of Ireland.
The Job
You will hold the SMF16 Compliance Oversight role and lead compliance for both the UK business and the Irish branch. You will report to the CFO and have direct access to the chair of the Risk & Compliance Committee.
A Head of Risk is already in place, so this is not two roles disguised as one.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
- Own the compliance framework, monitoring plan and regulatory relationships
- Keep SM&CR documentation accurate, including responsibilities maps, statements of responsibilities and certification
- Submit UK and Irish regulatory returns accurately and on time
- Act as the business’s Data Protection Officer
- Give the Board clear, plain English advice, including difficult messages when needed
You will probably bring
- Senior compliance experience within a PRA authorised insurer, ideally in general insurance or professional indemnity
- Practical, hands on SM&CR experience, not just theoretical knowledge. You do not need to have held a Senior Manager Function before; this could be your first step up.
- Experience acting as a Data Protection Officer, even if it formed part of a wider role
- The confidence to challenge senior stakeholders, with the judgement to know when to do so
- Knowledge of Irish regulation would be useful, but it is not essential.
