Head of Data

Location: London - Hybrid
Salary: £70,000-£96,000 per annum
Contract: Permanent, Full Time

About the Role

I am recruiting for a Head of Data for a Not for Profit based in London. You as the Head of Data will focus on Data strategy, governance & quality. You will modernize the cloud data infrastructure, including Microsoft Fabric & Power BI, and drive analytics, management information (MI), and self-service reporting. Additionally, you will build data literacy across the organization.

As part of an ongoing programme of digital and organizational transformation, the organization is investing significantly in how it uses data to improve decision-making, customer understanding, operational performance, and long-term growth.

Your Role

As Head of Data, you will lead the organization's data, analytics, reporting, and insight function. You will:

  • Own and deliver the data strategy and roadmap.
  • Ensure that data is collected, managed, governed, and leveraged effectively to support strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Combine strategic leadership with a strong understanding of modern data technologies and practices.
  • Work closely with Digital Transformation and IT to design and implement a scalable, modern data environment.
  • Ensure data quality, security, governance, and accessibility are embedded from the outset.
  • Build and develop a high-performing data team.
  • Create an environment where people can develop and deliver meaningful business impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and deliver the organization's data strategy, vision, and roadmap.
  • Partner with Executive Leadership and senior stakeholders to identify opportunities where data can improve performance, growth, customer experience, and operational efficiency.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, translating complex data and analytical findings into clear, actionable business insights.
  • Lead the development of a modern, scalable data architecture and infrastructure.
  • Work closely with Digital Transformation and IT to leverage cloud-based data technologies and modern data platforms.
  • Drive best practice across data engineering, including data pipelines, ETL/ELT, data modelling, and Medallion architecture.
  • Oversee the development of high-quality dashboards, Management Information, and analytical products for Executive, management, and operational audiences.
  • Increase the adoption of self-service analytics and reporting across the organization.
  • Improve data quality, reliability, accessibility, and trust.
  • Champion data literacy, developing the organization's confidence and capability in using data to make decisions.
  • Work closely with Data Governance and Data Protection stakeholders to ensure data initiatives are secure, ethical, compliant, and appropriately governed.
  • Recruit, lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of data engineers and analysts.
  • Foster strong collaboration between Data, IT, Digital Transformation, Finance, Operations, Governance, and Executive teams.
  • Identify opportunities to use data, automation, and analytics to drive continuous improvement and measurable organizational outcomes.

What You Need to Be Successful

  • Significant experience developing and delivering data strategies within a complex organization.
  • Proven experience leading a data, analytics, or data engineering function.
  • A track record of building, leading, and mentoring high-performing data teams.
  • Strong understanding of modern data architecture, engineering, analytics, and reporting.
  • Experience working with cloud-based data platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Strong technical knowledge of SQL and Python.
  • Experience with modern data technologies and tooling such as Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Databricks, or Looker.
  • Experience designing data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and modern data models.
  • Practical understanding of modern data architecture approaches, including Medallion architecture.
  • Experience delivering Management Information, dashboards, and executive-level reporting.
  • A proven ability to increase data literacy and influence non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, data quality, privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to influence and build credibility with senior and Executive-level stakeholders.
  • A pragmatic, commercially-minded approach, with a clear focus on turning data into measurable organizational value.
