Head of Data Engineering

Lead the Future of Data, Analytics & AI
We're looking for an experienced Head of Data Engineering to lead and shape our enterprise-wide data strategy, modern analytics platform, and AI-readiness roadmap. This is a unique opportunity to join a growing organisation where data is at the heart of strategic decision-making. Reporting directly to the Director of Technology, you'll take ownership of our Azure-based data platform and play a pivotal role in driving innovation, governance, operational excellence, and business performance through trusted data and analytics.
You'll combine strategic leadership with hands-on technical expertise, working across Azure Databricks, Microsoft Fabric and Power BI to deliver scalable, secure and business-focused data solutions.
What You'll Be Doing
Data Strategy & Governance
- Define and deliver the organisation's data and analytics strategy, roadmap and standards.
- Drive the development and maturity of data governance practices across the business.
- Establish clear ownership, data quality frameworks, lineage, metadata standards and access controls.
- Partner with senior stakeholders to identify and prioritise high-value analytics and AI initiatives.
- Provide expert guidance on data architecture, feasibility, cost, risk and technical direction.

Platform Ownership & Architecture
- Own and evolve the enterprise data platform across Azure Databricks, Microsoft Fabric and Power BI.
- Design and maintain scalable lakehouse and medallion architecture solutions.
- Build and enhance ingestion, orchestration and transformation pipelines using Python, PySpark and SQL.
- Establish engineering standards, data contracts and reusable frameworks to improve platform reliability and scalability.
Engineering & Delivery
- Lead the development of high-impact data solutions and analytics products.
- Deliver trusted datasets, semantic models and self-service reporting capabilities.
- Champion CI/CD, automation, testing, monitoring and engineering best practice.
- Drive improvements in data quality, service reliability and operational efficiency.
- Prepare governed, AI-ready datasets to support predictive, generative and agentic AI use cases
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor and develop a growing data engineering function.
- Act as the technical authority for data engineering and platform architecture.
- Manage third-party data partners and service providers, ensuring strong performance and value delivery.

Security, Compliance & Optimisation
- Ensure compliance with UK GDPR, ISO 27001 and internal security standards.
- Govern role-based access controls across Azure, Databricks, Fabric and Power BI.
- Monitor platform usage, performance and costs to maximise value and efficiency.
- Oversee reporting governance and ensure consistent business definitions across the organisation.
What We're Looking For
Essential Experience
- Proven experience in a senior Data Engineering, Data Platform or Technical Leadership role.
- Strong hands-on expertise with Azure Databricks, Python, SQL and Delta Lake.
- Experience building and operating modern data platforms and cloud-based analytics environments.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Fabric, Power BI and Azure data services.
- Deep understanding of data architecture, security, compliance and data quality management.
Desirable Experience
- Experience within education, apprenticeships or regulated environments.
- Microsoft or Databricks certifications.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID, Conditional Access, Privileged Identity Management and Zero Trust principles.
