Head of Education
Our new Head of Education (HoE) will provide strategic direction to, and oversight for, all activities within our Education Department, including age 5 – 18 education and Higher Education. This will include responsibility for the annual budget, the line management of our Education Team, and liaison with our Education and Joint Higher Education Committees to deliver impactful and accessible initiatives that promote awareness and understanding of the Earth and beyond. In addition, the HoE will project manage the Society’s flagship ‘This is Geoscience’ initiative until 2028.
Working in partnership with senior staff, our Education Committee, and Trustees, you will advance the Society’s Education objectives in line with our Education Strategy, providing expertise and strategic direction to ensure the development of trusted Education initiatives for all ages.
You will be designing, planning, and delivering projects aimed at improving learning outcomes for young people, students, key stakeholders, and the wider geoscience community, as well as participating in government consultation and policy work where relevant. Beyond this, you can expect to foster strong relationships with key stakeholders and external partners to ensure that the Society continues to embed itself as an inclusive and reliable role model within the geoscience education space, and a leader to the wider geoscience community on a global scale.

What we’re looking for…
Essential
- Experience of working in formal or informal education role(s)
- Demonstrable knowledge of the UK education system, ages 5-18
- Science communication experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- First Degree in Geoscience, Education, or a related subject
- Line-management experience, preferably including a track record of coaching, mentoring, and professional development
- Project management experience
- Experience of promoting activities and organising events
- Experience in setting and managing budgets

Desirable
- Demonstrable knowledge of the UK higher education sector
- Experience making education initiatives accessible for those with SEND and reducing barriers to participation
- Demonstrable knowledge of international education systems with respect to geoscience
- Experience of developing and delivering training
- Experience of working with external partners to deliver successful outcomes
- Experience of impact assessment and performance tracking
- Outreach and/or public engagement experience
