Head of Engineering – Energy Trading
£150,000 + Bonus + Benefits | Paddington, London – 4 Days Office
A leading organisation within the energy trading sector is undergoing a major technology transformation, modernising its core trading, data, and analytics platforms. With significant investment into its technology function, the business is building a next-generation platform to support data-driven decision making and improve the way its trading teams operate.
As part of this transformation, the organisation is seeking a Head of Engineering to lead a growing technology function across software development, data engineering and QA. This is a senior engineering leadership position with responsibility for technical direction, engineering standards, delivery and team development.
The Opportunity
This is a key leadership role for an experienced engineering leader who enjoys working in a hands-on, technically complex environment. You will lead the engineering function while remaining close to the technology, working with developers, data engineers and QA engineers to deliver high-quality platforms supporting the firm's energy trading activities.
You will take ownership of engineering strategy and delivery, helping shape the architecture, development practices and technology roadmap. You will work closely with senior stakeholders across technology and the business to ensure the engineering function continues to support the firm's trading and commercial objectives.
The platform will process and integrate large volumes of data, supporting teams across energy trading, risk, analytics and operations. You will have the opportunity to shape a modern engineering function and play a key role in the ongoing transformation of the firm's technology estate.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the engineering function across Software Development, Data Engineering and QA.
- Own the engineering strategy, technical direction and delivery of critical technology across the firm's energy trading platform.
- Build and maintain a high-performing engineering team, supporting recruitment, development, mentoring and progression.
- Provide technical leadership across architecture, software development, data platforms, testing and system integration.
- Work closely with senior technology and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Oversee the development of applications, APIs, microservices and data platforms supporting energy trading.
- Establish and maintain strong engineering standards around code quality, testing, deployment and documentation.
- Drive the adoption of modern development practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, cloud technologies and DevOps.
- Ensure close collaboration between developers, data engineers and QA throughout the development lifecycle.
- Help shape the long-term architecture and technology roadmap as the organisation continues its modernisation programme.
- Mentor senior engineers and technical leads, creating a strong culture of ownership, collaboration and continuous improvement.

What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience leading an engineering function or large engineering team within a complex technology environment.
- Strong background in software engineering, ideally with experience across development, data engineering and QA.
- Strong technical understanding of modern software architecture, distributed systems, APIs, microservices and data platforms.
- Experience with C#/.NET would be highly advantageous.
- Strong understanding of cloud technologies, DevOps, CI/CD and automated testing.
- Experience building and developing high-performing engineering teams.
- Comfortable operating at both a strategic and technical level, with the ability to engage with engineers as well as senior business stakeholders.
- Experience working with complex data environments or high-volume, real-time systems.
- Energy trading, commodities or financial markets experience would be highly advantageous.
- A strong communicator who can provide clear technical direction while giving engineering teams the autonomy to deliver.
Compensation: Up to £150,000 + Bonus + Benefits
Location: Paddington, London
Working Pattern: 4 days per week in the office
