Who are we?
We’re Standard Life, a retirement specialist focused entirely on retirement savings and income. We champion the belief that everyone’s journey to and through retirement can be better, and for more than 200 years, we’ve been helping our customers plan and prepare for their financial futures.
Life today is increasingly complicated, uncertain and unpredictable. People move through different careers, face unexpected moments and navigate important choices. We offer our colleagues flexibility, trust and benefits that work for whatever life brings. In return we expect curiosity, connection, accountability and high standards. We make room for what matters - so you can bring your best, every day.
The role
As Head of Engineering Operations at Standard Life, you will lead the capability that underpins engineering quality, delivery assurance, environments, release discipline and operational resilience all underpinned with industry standard metrics across the Digital & Information Office. This is a senior, high-impact leadership role within Engineering & Delivery, working at the centre of our move to a more product-led, platform-based and customer-focused technology function.
You will shape and lead the operational backbone of engineering: owning, evolving and maintaining the Quality Framework; coordinating standards across Digital Information Office practices; and ensuring delivery teams comply with relevant standards, automating controls and quality gates wherever possible.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
