Head of Engineering

We’re looking for an experienced Head of Engineering to lead our engineering team, working remotely. Reporting to the CTO, you’ll take on the day-to-day leadership of a team of around nine engineers (plus contractors), sitting alongside our product function within the wider product and engineering team.

This is primarily a leadership and people role, focused on the “how” – how we build, how the system should evolve, and how the team works together and grows – complementing the product team’s focus on the “what” and “why”. You will be joining a team with strong technical ownership and autonomy, so we’re looking for a leader to keep building on the team’s strengths. We’re proud of a collaborative, high-autonomy, no-blame culture, and we are looking for someone to support and develop our people.

Need to haves:

  • Proven experience leading and line-managing engineering teams in a supportive, empowering style.
  • A strong technical background and credibility – able to engage confidently in technical and architectural discussions and support the team’s decisions (day-to-day hands-on coding is not required).
  • A track record of developing people, giving good feedback and building clear career progression.
  • The ability to integrate seamlessly into an established, high-performing team – building on its strengths rather than driving a full turnaround.
  • Excellent communication, and comfort both challenging and being challenged openly across the organisation.
  • Experience turning technical initiatives into prioritised, business-justified projects and convincing a reasonable, engaged team to back them.
  • A solid understanding of modern software development practices, including working with AI code assistants.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Nice to haves:

  • Prior experience in fintech, lending, or other regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with our stack (PHP/Laravel and Kotlin microservices, GraphQL, and a Flutter mobile app) or comparable technologies.
  • Experience in a scale-up or early-stage company where you’ve helped shape engineering culture.
  • Exposure to incident management and engineering-quality practices.

About the Role

Lead and support the day-to-day management of a team of nine engineers, acting as line manager and mentor. This is a leadership role rather than a full-time individual-contributor one; hands-on coding is welcome but not a requirement of the job.

  • Build on the team's autonomy and self-direction, helping people choose and shape their own work within clear priorities. The aim is a team where ownership is genuinely shared, so that progress never depends on any single person being available.
  • Continue to foster our open, no-blame culture, where concerns, risks and mistakes are raised early and challenged openly in every direction, upwards, downwards and sideways. Our team turns towards problems rather than away from them, treating each one as a chance to strengthen how we work.
  • Own people development through regular feedback, mentoring and clear career paths, including a genuine technical track towards staff and principal engineer.
  • Partner closely with product to bring engineering and product together, translating technical needs into clearly-prioritised, business-justified work.
  • Act as a technical sponsor and advocate for larger-scale, innovative work, including AI-enabled initiatives. That means proposing these projects, making the business case for them, and giving them a real place in the roadmap alongside product delivery rather than leaving them to sit in the backlog.
  • Support technical and architectural decision-making, leveraging the strong domain knowledge that already exists in the team.
  • Represent engineering with stakeholders, and manage cross-team dependencies and delivery.
