I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You will bring:
- Significant engineering leadership experience across complex digital services, ideally within UK Central Government or another regulated environment.
- A strong software engineering background and sufficient technical depth to command the confidence of senior engineers, architects and client technical leaders.
- Experience leading multiple engineering teams rather than only a single programme or product.

- Experience with GDS-style multidisciplinary delivery and an understanding of the Service Standard and Technology Code of Practice.
- Strong understanding of security and privacy by design.
- Evidence of developing engineering capability through coaching, mentoring, standards and communities of practice.
- Strong consultancy skills and the ability to operate credibly with senior government stakeholders.
- Commercial awareness, including experience shaping work, estimating delivery and contributing to bids or proposals.

- You do not need to be an AI researcher. We are looking for an engineering leader who understands how to turn emerging technology into production-grade services.
