Head of Engineering / Senior Engineering Manager, £85,000 to £95,000 salary guide, Commutable from Coventry, West Midlands, and East Midlands areas
Are you an experienced Head of Engineering, Engineering Manager, Chief Engineer or Engineering Manager with a background in defence, automotive, aerospace or complex vehicle engineering?
Are you looking for an opportunity to lead the UK engineering function of a highly innovative, fast growing Defence Vehicle / Robotics and Autonomous Systems business backed by a larger global engineering group developing novel off-road uncrewed systems technology.
This is an exciting opportunity to take strategic and technical leadership responsibility for a small multidisciplinary UK engineering team, working alongside an established international engineering organisation. You will play a key role in developing the company's UK engineering capability while delivering advanced low volume vehicle platforms, prototypes, technology demonstrators and specialist vehicle variants for UK and international customers.
The Head of Engineering Opportunity
As Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for the strategic leadership, governance and delivery of all UK-based vehicle platform engineering and product development activities.
You will lead a small multidisciplinary UK engineering team that forms an integral part of a wider global engineering organisation. The UK operation provides particular expertise in proof-of-concept development, prototype build, systems integration, and specialist vehicle applications, giving you the opportunity to shape and develop a growing engineering capability.

Key Responsibilities – Head of Engineering / Senior Engineering Manager
- Lead the delivery of UK-based vehicle engineering platforms, R&D and product development programmes.
- Lead and develop a high-performing multidisciplinary UK engineering team.
- Ensure customer requirements are fully understood, captured, managed and delivered.
- Provide technical leadership and authority across engineering programmes.
- Take responsibility for engineering delivery against cost, timing, quality and technical performance objectives.
- Establish and maintain robust engineering processes, governance and lifecycle management.
- Support the migration of the UK engineering team towards established global engineering processes while retaining the agility required by UK customer programmes.
- Define and maintain technical roadmaps.
- Support bids and business development activities through technical solution development, costing and customer engagement.
Your background as Head of Engineering / Senior Engineering Manager
We are looking for an experienced engineering leader who combines strong technical engineering capability with proven people and technical leadership experience.
You may currently be working as a: Head of Engineering, Engineering Manager, Senior Engineering Manager, Chief Engineer, Systems Engineering Manager, or similar senior engineering leadership position.

You should have:
- Significant senior engineering leadership or management experience, ideally within Defence, Automotive, Off-Highway Vehicles or a closely related engineering environment.
- Proven experience managing complex, high-technology engineering programmes or project groups.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams covering areas such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering and vehicle build/technician functions.
- Strong programme / project delivery, technical governance and problem-solving capability.
- Experience supporting bids, technical proposals or customer-facing engineering activities.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel as appropriate (not significant amounts).
