Lead change. Champion equity. Transform mental health outcomes.
At Rethink Mental Illness, we believe everyone deserves access to high-quality mental health care and support, regardless of their background, ethnicity, faith, or life circumstances.
We're looking for an exceptional Head of Equity and Racial Justice to join us on a maternity cover contract and play a leading role in tackling racial inequalities across mental health and social care systems.
This is a unique opportunity to influence national policy, lead high-profile programmes, and help drive our commitment to becoming an anti-racist organisation. You'll work at the heart of our Policy and Practice directorate, shaping change that improves outcomes for people from racialised communities affected by severe mental illness.
About the role
Reporting to the Associate Director for Policy and Influencing, you will provide strategic leadership for Rethink Mental Illness's work supporting the Department of Health and Social Care's Mental Health Act Code of Practice review and implementation programme, with a particular focus on engagement with Ethnic Minority and Racialised Communities.
You will lead relationships with government departments, NHS England, voluntary sector partners, community organisations and experts by experience, ensuring that lived experience and community voices are central to policy development and implementation.
Alongside this national programme, you will contribute to the development and delivery of our wider Equity and Racial Justice strategy, helping to influence policy, practice and systems that better serve communities experiencing mental health inequalities.
You will also:
- Provide line management and strategic support to the Equity and Racial Justice Manager.
- Oversee our Faith and Mental Health and Sanctuary Seeking and Mental Health workstreams.
- Develop and maintain influential partnerships across the sector.
- Lead complex programmes, budgets, governance arrangements and risk management.
- Identify and secure income generation opportunities to sustain and grow the Equity and Racial Justice portfolio.
- Act as a senior leader within the Policy and Practice Leadership Team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
