SMART Multi Academy Trust (SMART) is the South East Cornwall Multi Academy Regional Trust, serving a diverse range of educational settings. The Trust currently includes nursery and pre-school sites, primary schools, specialist resource bases for pupils with moderate learning difficulties, secondary schools, and sixth form/post-16 provision. SMART is highly collaborative, working closely with staff, learners, families, and local communities to support high-quality education across the region. The Trust is committed to meeting the needs of all communities in South East Cornwall and to contributing to national improvements in multi academy trusts through strong system leadership.
Role Description
The Head of Estates is a full-time, on-site role based in Liskeard, with responsibility for the strategic management and operational oversight of all Trust buildings, grounds, and related facilities. Day-to-day tasks include:
- Planning and supervising maintenance, repairs, and refurbishment works
- Managing contracts and service providers
- Ensuring all sites are safe, secure, and compliant with relevant health, safety, and statutory regulations

The role involves:
- Developing and implementing an estates strategy aligned with the Trust’s educational priorities
- Overseeing budgets and asset management
- Producing reports and plans for senior leadership and trustees
The Head of Estates works closely with school leaders and site teams to coordinate premises operations, support capital projects, and ensure that learning environments are well-presented, efficient, and fit for purpose.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in estates or facilities management, including overseeing maintenance, repairs, and planned works across multiple sites.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, compliance standards, risk assessment, and safeguarding requirements within an education or public-sector context.
- Proven ability in budget management, procurement, and contract negotiation, with experience monitoring service levels and value for money.
- Competence in project management, including planning, coordinating, and delivering capital or improvement projects on time and within budget.
- Effective leadership and people management skills, with the ability to guide site teams, work collaboratively with school leaders, and communicate clearly with diverse stakeholders.
- Good IT skills, including use of facilities or asset management systems, spreadsheets, and standard office software for reporting and record-keeping.
- Relevant professional qualification in estates, facilities management, construction, or a related field (e.g., IWFM, NEBOSH, building or engineering qualification), or equivalent experience.
