Head of Estates

Finton House School
Wandsworth, South West London
£60,000-£65,000

This is an opportunity to take ownership of the estate at Finton House, a successful independent prep school in Wandsworth, and have a genuine say in how it develops over the next five years.

You’ll have the autonomy to assess what’s working, identify what needs attention and put forward a clear plan for future maintenance and improvement, rather than simply responding to problems as they arise.

You’ll lead the day-to-day management of the estate, facilities, compliance and contractors, while also managing the Caretaker and Head of Transport and providing operational oversight of catering. Established maintenance systems and specialist contractors are already in place, giving you a solid foundation from which to raise standards, strengthen processes and introduce more digital-first ways of working.

The role also extends beyond the main school site, with responsibility for supporting the safe and effective operation of other locations used for sport, outdoor learning and school activities. You’ll provide oversight of health and safety, safeguarding and operational arrangements, ensuring these locations meet the standards expected by the School.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

At Finton, the quality of the estate is about more than buildings.

This is a warm, inclusive and non-selective school with a strong sense of community. Its buildings and grounds are experienced every day by pupils, parents and staff, so the standards you set will be visible and will contribute directly to their experience of the school.

It’s a relatively compact estate, so this isn’t a role for someone who wants to manage from a distance. You’ll be visible, engaged and hands-on when required. In return, you’ll have direct access to senior leadership and the opportunity to influence how the estate develops.

There’s an attractive balance outside work too, with no boarding, no routine weekend working and very limited out-of-hours call-outs.

The package includes £60,000-£65,000, 30 days’ holiday, a 7.5% employer pension contribution, medical insurance option, life and income protection, 65% staff fee discount and free term-time lunches.

Previous school experience isn’t essential. Strong estates or facilities experience from another high-standard, public-facing environment could translate well, and candidates with military backgrounds are also encouraged.

What matters most is your track record of seeing what needs to change, building a plan and then delivering it.
