Head of Finance
Charity supporting communities across the North | [Leeds / hybrid] | £55,000 | Permanent
Want to lead a finance function where the numbers make a real difference to people's lives?
We're working with a well-established charity that supports communities across the North of England. They're looking for a Head of Finance to lead their finance team and deputise for the Chief Finance Officer.
You'll be responsible for the whole finance function. That covers financial and management accounting, budgeting and forecasting, treasury, transactional finance, systems and housing rents.
As part of the senior management team, you'll help shape the organisation's culture and direction, not just report on it.
What You'll Be Doing
- Leading the annual budget and medium-term financial plan, giving budget holders both support and challenge
- Producing accurate monthly group and entity management accounts, with commentary that helps people make decisions
- Keeping a strong financial control framework in place and making sure any weaknesses get fixed quickly
- Leading year end, the external audit and the group and subsidiary statutory accounts
- Overseeing treasury, including weekly cash-flow forecasting
- Leading the financial governance of housing rents and service charges, including annual rent setting, compliance and assurance
- Reviewing and signing off tenders and grant applications
- Driving improvements to finance systems, data quality and reporting automation
- Leading and developing a high-performing team, with accountability and continuous improvement at its heart

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
