Head of Finance and Commercial
About Synyega
Synyega is one of the UK's fastest-growing technology consultancies, specialising in helping some of the world's largest and most complex organisations manage, optimise and buy technology better. Our expertise spans Software and IT Asset Management, Cloud and FinOps, AI and sustainability, encompassing the rapidly evolving discipline of Technology Spend Management.
We have built the business organically and profitably, without external investment, and are now entering an exciting next phase of growth.
We are investing in people, technology, AI, new capabilities and the infrastructure needed to build a significantly larger business.
As we grow, we want to become increasingly sophisticated about how we make those investments, how we measure their impact and how we allocate our capital.
That is where this role comes in.
About the Role
We are looking for a Head of Finance and Commercial to own the financial engine of Synyega and help us build the financial capability required for our next stage of growth.
This is not simply a reporting or accounting role, and it is not about maintaining a finance function somebody else has already designed.
You'll own the fundamentals: management accounts, cash, forecasting, working capital, controls, compliance and reporting, but we expect you to go considerably further.
Working directly with the CEO and owners, you'll help us understand how the business is really performing, where our money is going, what return our investments are generating and where we should invest next. As Synyega grows, we need to invest ahead of demand. That means recruiting people before all of their capacity is consumed, building capabilities before they reach scale and investing in technology and AI today to create efficiencies tomorrow.
You'll also bring constructive challenge. We don't want finance simply validating decisions that have already been made. We want someone curious and commercially minded enough to question assumptions, test the evidence and challenge the CEO and leadership team when the numbers tell us something different.
This is a hands-on, high-autonomy role with significant access to the CEO and owners.
What You'll Be Doing
Own the Financial Engine
- Own the monthly close and management accounts, ensuring balance sheet integrity, appropriate accruals and prepayments, and accurate revenue and cost recognition.
- Explain what has actually happened in the business, why it happened and what we should do about it, not simply what the numbers say.
- Build increasingly sophisticated forecasting across revenue, profitability, cash, working capital and resource requirements.
- Own cash flow forecasting, treasury and the financial control environment.
- Manage our external accountants, tax advisers, auditors and other financial partners.
Investment, Business Cases & Return
- Develop proportionate business cases for material investments, with clear assumptions, expected outcomes, costs, timescales and measures of success.
- Establish regular investment look-backs: what did we say would happen, what actually happened, and what have we learned?
- Help leadership distinguish between investments that need more time, those that should be accelerated and those where the evidence no longer supports continued investment.
- Develop a consistent approach to understanding ROI across people, technology, AI, go-to-market, marketing, new services and internal innovation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
People, Growth & Capacity
- Connect sales pipeline, demand, utilisation, capacity and recruitment into a coherent financial view.
- Develop modelling that helps us balance the risk of recruiting too early against the opportunity cost and delivery risk of recruiting too late.
- Improve visibility of utilisation, revenue per employee, cost of capacity, gross margin and profitability across the business.
- Help leadership understand the financial return from different teams, capabilities and investments.
Technology, AI & Efficiency
- We want to understand whether our investments in technology and AI are genuinely making us better.
- Establish clear financial and operational baselines before significant technology investments are made.
- Measure whether promised efficiencies, productivity improvements, cost reductions or capacity gains are actually being achieved.
- Translate efficiency into meaningful commercial measures, not simply hours theoretically saved.
- Challenge technology investment where benefits cannot be demonstrated.
- Actively replace repetitive administration and manual financial processes with automation and AI-assisted workflows.
- Help us build a finance function that can support a significantly larger Synyega without finance headcount growing at the same rate.
Working Capital, Cash & Capital Allocation
- Synyega has been built without external investment. Understanding how much capital the business genuinely requires (and how much is excess) is therefore particularly important.
- Develop a robust approach to determining Synyega's appropriate working capital requirement.
- Provide clear visibility of required operating capital versus excess shareholder capital.
- Ensure cash is managed intelligently, balancing resilience, return and accessibility.
- Help answer an increasingly important question: where should Synyega's next £1 of capital be deployed to create the greatest value?
Commercial Insight & Challenge
- Develop meaningful insight into revenue, gross margin, utilisation, delivery costs and profitability across clients, services and teams.
- Build scenario models that allow leadership to understand the implications of different growth, investment and hiring decisions before making them.
- Identify where performance is diverging from plan early enough for us to do something about it.
- Act as the financial conscience of the business, with a direct line to the CEO and owners and a meaningful voice in how Synyega grows and invests.
Commercial & Financial Governance
- Support the financial and commercial review of customer and supplier contracts, Statements of Work, NDAs and other routine agreements.
- Ensure key commercial terms (including pricing, margin, payment terms, financial commitments and termination provisions) are understood and appropriately controlled.
- Help establish proportionate commercial approval processes and delegated authorities.
- Coordinate with external legal advisers where specialist advice is required.
What We're Looking For
- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA), or qualified by experience with a track record that stands up to scrutiny.
- Genuine ownership of monthly close, management accounts, forecasting and financial reporting from start to finish.
- Strong technical grounding in accrual accounting, revenue recognition, cash management and balance sheet control.
- Strong commercial instincts. You want to understand how the business makes money, not simply how that money is accounted for.
- Comfortable analysing project and service profitability, utilisation, margins and the economics of a people-led professional services business.
- Able to build a credible business case and, importantly, return later and objectively assess whether it delivered.
- Confident enough to challenge the CEO and owners constructively when appropriate.
- Exceptional attention to detail, combined with the judgement to know when precision matters and when speed matters.
- A clear communicator who can make financial information understandable and useful to non-finance colleagues.
- AI-native in your approach. You should already be using or experimenting with AI and automation and be able to explain how technology can improve the quality, speed and efficiency of finance.
- Experience within consultancy, professional services, technology or another rapidly scaling business would be particularly valuable.
- Experience with Xero and modern financial tooling is desirable.
- SQL, Python, Power BI or low-code automation experience would be useful, but curiosity and willingness to use technology matter more.

What to Expect
This is not a maintenance role.
You'll be building the finance function while running it — improving systems, strengthening controls, automating processes and developing the financial and commercial insight Synyega needs as it grows. Some days you'll be deep in the numbers. Others you'll be sitting with the CEO looking at whether we should recruit ahead of demand, invest further in a new capability, change direction on something that isn't delivering or decide how much capital the business genuinely needs to retain.
You won't always have perfect information.
We want someone capable of creating structure from that ambiguity — using data, judgement and commercial instinct to help us make better decisions.
If we approved an investment on the basis that it would deliver a particular outcome, we want somebody to come back and tell us whether it did. If an assumption no longer holds, we want to know. The objective isn't financial control for its own sake.
It is to create a modern, commercially focused and increasingly automated finance capability that gives Synyega the confidence to invest, grow and make better decisions.
The right person won't simply report on Synyega's growth. They'll help us make better decisions about how we achieve it.
