I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

This is a hands-on interim seat reporting directly to the CFO, leading a team of four. The role covers a period of maternity leave and requires someone who can step in at pace and hold the function with confidence. Cash management is central: short and mid-term forecasting, weekly covenant monitoring, and active management of a receivables financing facility. Alongside that, you will own the audit, lead FP&A and budgeting, maintain the five-year strategic model, and partner with heads of department on performance and commercial decisions. It is equally a detail role and a leadership role, and the right candidate will be comfortable moving between both.
WHAT EXPERIENCES YOU WILL GAIN
- Owning bottom-up cash forecasting, weekly cash management and active management of a receivables financing facility
- Leading the annual audit end-to-end, including R&D tax credit submission
- Delivering management reporting and commercial insights to senior leadership across a fast-paced consumer business
- Leading the FP&A timetable, annual budget process and financial modelling to support strategic decision-making
- Maintaining and developing the five-year strategic plan model in partnership with the leadership team
- Leading a finance team of four in a high-growth, product-led environment
