Ready to shape finance oversight for CIB and HCIB’s COO portfolio?
Why HSBC
HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. Guided by our purpose of opening up a world of opportunity, our ambition is to become the world’s most trusted bank globally, putting customers at the heart of everything we do.
The Role
This role is the senior finance partner to the Chief Operating Officer for CIB and HCIB, providing independent advice and constructive challenge across CIB and our European entity. You’ll oversee the financial and commercial integrity of the COO cost base and partner closely on delivery of CIB and COO financial and non-financial outcomes, including AI and restructuring plans. The role spans planning, forecasting and performance management with a strong focus on affordability, investment choices and managing risks and opportunities. You’ll represent CIB Finance across strategic programmes including operating-model change, simplification and technology transformation. Success means clear, credible plans that translate complex financial and operational information into actions that can be tracked and delivered. It also means strong governance that makes benefits visible and measurable through the financial planning cycle.
What you'll be doing
- Act as principal finance adviser to the COO, building a strong understanding of portfolio dynamics, the operating model and financial drivers
- Own planning, forecasting and performance management with forward-looking insight on affordability, investment, risks and opportunities
- Oversee the COO cost base, including costs, FTE, resource productivity, programme benefits and delivery against financial commitments
- Translate complex financial and operational information into clear plans and measurable actions
- Govern finance oversight of CIB and HCIB AI outcomes and reinforce accountability for planned outcomes
- Establish high standards for business cases across baselines, costs, benefits, dependencies, risks and post-implementation tracking
- Test assumptions, prevent double counting and ensure benefits are credible, ring-fenced and visible in the planning cycle
- Represent CIB Finance across strategic programmes, providing assurance over scope, affordability, investment, execution risk and expected outcomes

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
