About The Role

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Head of Finance to join the Intercity senior leadership team. This is a hands-on role with real ownership. You will run the day-to-day finance function, drive the month-end close, lead a capable team and play a genuine part in shaping how the business operates. Reporting directly to the CFO, this is a role where your fingerprints will be on the numbers that matter.

Intercity is a technology company spanning Cloud, Cyber, Managed IT and Communications, with over 40 years of history, real commercial ambition and a finance function that has room to grow. We are profitable, purpose-led and people-first.

The finance function works well. But there are manual processes that a sharp, improvement-minded Head of Finance can modernise. We want someone who sees that as an opportunity.

What You Will Do

You will own the financial control environment across the Intercity group, lead a dedicated finance team and make sure the numbers going to the board and the CFO are accurate, timely and meaningful. Beyond keeping the engine running, you will be expected to improve it.

Day To Day That Looks Like

  • Taking full ownership of month-end close and delivering it to a consistent timetable
  • Preparing the monthly board reporting pack including management accounts, KPIs and financial commentary, and presenting it with clarity
  • Running the balance sheet reconciliation process and owning exception management when issues surface
  • Leading the year-end statutory accounts process and acting as the primary contact for external auditors
  • Overseeing cashflow forecasting and cash conversion
  • Supporting the CFO on budgeting, forecasting and ad hoc commercial work including acquisitions, investment appraisals and growth decisions
  • Leading, developing and holding your team accountable for quality and deadlines
  • Identifying and driving automation and process improvement across a finance function that has real opportunity to modernise
  • Supporting on compliance including VAT, corporation tax, payroll sign-off and HMRC submissions

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What We Are Looking For

You will be fully qualified (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) and you will bring significant post-qualification experience in a senior finance role where you have genuinely owned the numbers, not supported someone else who did.

Beyond The Qualification, We Are Looking For

  • A demonstrable track record of owning month-end close and delivering board-quality reporting under real deadline pressure
  • Experience building and maintaining a robust internal control framework. You spot weaknesses proactively and fix them
  • The ability to lead and develop a finance team, set clear expectations and hold people to them
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to turn financial data into insight that non-financial people can act on
  • Experience in a multi-entity or group finance environment
  • An eye for process improvement. You do not accept manual workarounds as permanent fixtures
  • Commercial awareness. You understand what drives a P&L and you contribute to decisions, not just report on them

Useful But Not Essential

  • Experience in technology, telecoms or managed services
  • Familiarity with Power BI or similar reporting tools
  • Experience supporting or leading a finance transformation or systems implementation
  • Background in an SME or mid-market business in the £30m to £100m revenue range

What It Is Like Here

Intercity is a family-owned business with the ambition of a much larger one. We have been around long enough to have seen a lot, and agile enough to keep moving. The finance team sits at the heart of that, informing decisions, keeping the business honest and helping it grow.

We take culture seriously without making it performative. Our values (we care, we think secure, we make it happen, we do the right thing, we enjoy what we do) are things people actually use to make decisions. We have the awards to back it up, but we would rather show you than list them.
