I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
The foundations exist. The dedicated practice still needs building.
The opportunity
You will remain hands-on, working senior and higher-fee appointments while developing the wider practice.
You will have established relationships to develop, scope to open new accounts and the chance to help the current consultant progress to Senior. As the desk grows, you can recruit and develop a larger team around you.
You will report directly to a Director and have the freedom to shape the market coverage, client strategy and future structure of the team.
Commission
Commission is calculated quarterly across six bands, rising from 7.5% to 40%. The threshold is equal to one quarter of your annual basic salary, with the top band reached above £75,000 in quarterly billings.

Who this suits

A background spanning Wealth and Pensions could also fit. Those coming from another market would need clear crossover and credible relationships within Financial Planning or Wealth.
