About the Company

Wing Yip is looking to appoint a Head of Group Finance to lead our Finance, Payroll, and Stock Control functions during an important period of growth and development.

Founded in Birmingham in 1970, Wing Yip has grown into a substantial family-owned food retail and wholesale group, with annual turnover of approximately £180m, around 360 colleagues, four Superstores, a Central Distribution Centre and a growing convenience-store operation.

We are investing in the next stage of the Group's development, including the rollout of five additional convenience stores over the next nine months, increased cold-storage capability, and continued investment in systems and management information.

The Role

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Head of Group Finance will provide strong technical and commercial leadership of the Finance function, while developing the team and ensuring that financial information is accurate, timely, properly understood and used to support decision-making across the business.

The role has a broad remit including:

  • Financial and commercial leadership, including management accounts, KPIs, forecasting, analysis and understanding the drivers of Group performance.
  • Leadership, development and coaching of the Finance and Payroll teams.
  • Leadership of the Group's stock-control function and financial governance of approximately £27m of inventory.
  • Financial controls, working capital, cash-flow forecasting and treasury controls.
  • Development of management information, including Power BI.
  • Financial control of imported goods, including foreign currency and import-related transactions; and
  • Year-end audit, tax and finance-led compliance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that stock transactions reconcile and for leading the stock-control operation, working with Supply Chain and logistics, Purchasing, Operations, and site management to continually improve the processes and controls that determine stock accuracy.

The Person

We are looking for a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) with strong technical financial capability, commercial judgement, and the credibility to lead and develop a Finance function.

We are less concerned with whether someone has already performed this exact role in this exact industry than with their ability to understand a business, take ownership, and improve it.

The successful candidate will be comfortable getting beneath the numbers, understanding the commercial and operational drivers of performance, investigating unfamiliar issues and constructively challenging both the figures and the assumptions behind them.

Experience within food retail, wholesale, distribution or another stock-intensive environment would be useful but is not essential.

This could suit an established Head of Finance or Group Financial Controller, or an ambitious Financial Controller ready to take on broader Group responsibility.
