Building a sustainable tomorrow
BAM UK & Ireland is recruiting a Head of Health and Safety for the FM Segment. This role will be based between any UK office location and sites across the UK.
To provide strategic Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HS&W) leadership and expert guidance across the Sector/Region, ensuring alignment with business objectives, operational priorities, and client expectations. The role is responsible for leading and developing the HS&W team, contributing to the divisional HS&W strategy, and supporting the delivery of key business goals. Working collaboratively with senior leaders and stakeholders, the post holder will drive continuous improvement, promote best practice, and foster industry collaboration to enhance health, safety, and wellbeing performance across the business.
Making Possible
Resource - Organisation
- Work with HR, L&D and Sector/Region leadership to ensure persons working for the Sector/Region are competent in line with divisional, segment & sector-specific H&S requirements
- Engage with stakeholders to ensure they understand BAM H&S requirements and ways of working
- Monitor training courses and training providers to ensure they are fit for purpose
Resource – H&S Team
- Ensure high-quality H&S support is provided to the Sector/Region at all stages of the construction project lifecycle and operational activities
- Manage and develop the Sector/Region H&S team, fostering an inclusive environment that supports recruitment, objective setting, performance management, succession planning and the development of emerging H&S leaders
Control Framework
- Review and provide feedback on whether the H&S management system and supporting platforms are fit for purpose and make it easy for people to succeed
- Contribute to, or own, Sector/Region specific processes and procedures
- Ensure regular review of minimum standards, policies and procedures to ensure they support Everyone Safe & Well Every Day
- Ensure effective H&S emergency preparedness and Sector/Region resilience planning

Culture
- Lead by example and help develop a safe and well culture
- Influence the Sector/Region leadership team to ensure an inclusive, healthy, physically and psychologically safe culture is achieved
- Support and embed Everyone Safe & Well Every Day
- Champion and support the UK & Ireland wellbeing strategy
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure that H&S is embedded as business as usual
- Collaborate with and support external stakeholders including clients, supply chain and industry peers
Assurance
- Monitor and drive Sector/Region H&S performance against Group, Divisional, Segment, Sector/Region and Client KPIs/ metrics
- Ensure compliance with divisional and client H&S requirements
- Ensure support and intervention where H&S improvements are required
- Review and monitor supply chain H&S performance and ensure corrective actions are implemented where required
- Provide H&S leadership during internal and external audits, and accreditation activities
Learning
- Actively celebrate success and best practice
- Identify and communicate Sector/Region H&S trends, insights, learning and improvements
- Oversee the production of high-quality H&S reports, returns and communication alerts
- Lead and manage effective incident management within the Sector/Region
- Ensure root causes are identified, actions are implemented to prevent recurrence, and learning is communicated internally and externally where appropriate
- Embed best practice, learning and improvement as business as usual
- Ensure the ongoing professional development of the H&S team through coaching, mentoring and structured development opportunities
- Communicate learning with external stakeholders to support industry improvement

What do you bring to the role?
Qualifications & Experience
- Chartered Fellow or Chartered Member of IOSH (or demonstrably working towards Chartered status)
- NEBOSH NVQ Diploma or equivalent Level 6 qualification
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in H&S, including significant leadership responsibility
- Experience working within the FM or construction sector.
- Strong people leadership skills and a proven track record of developing and leading high-performing teams
- Experience of providing highly technical H&S support to complex Construction or Civil Engineering projects
- Track record of delivering tangible H&S improvements
- Excellent influencing and communication skills
- High level understanding of root cause analysis
- Understanding of behavioural science and human factors
- Commitment to continuous professional development
- Extensive industry network and demonstrable experience of industry improvement
