Head of Health & Safety/Construction

Location: HPC Construction Site - TBC

Pay Rate or Salary: £615 PAYE / £850 Umbrella

Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Head of Health & Safety/Construction to join a leading organisation in the UK nuclear/energy sector, overseeing health and safety across a major infrastructure programme. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring the compliance and safety standards on a significant construction site, promoting best practices, and establishing a world-class safety culture. This is a senior leadership position ideal for a committed safety professional with a proven track record in large-scale, regulated environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate activities to ensure full compliance with Health and Safety standards and principal contractor requirements.
  • Establish, monitor, and continuously improve health and safety policies, aligning with risk profiles and best practice.
  • Oversee all health and safety activities, including supply chain management and contractor onboarding, ensuring adherence to statutory regulations and company directives.
  • Support the development of a strong safety culture aligned with nuclear safety standards and practices.
  • Manage departmental budgets, resources, and staff development initiatives to meet project goals and standards.
  • Work closely with senior management to develop and implement construction site strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and report on progress and performance metrics.
  • Support emergency schemes and ensure operational experience feedback is applied effectively.
  • Manage health and safety teams, including Occupational Health and Hygiene and Construction Safety teams, ensuring their ongoing professional development.

Requirements / Experience

  • Significant experience managing health and safety departments within large, complex projects.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience working with external regulatory bodies and stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of achieving high health and safety performance standards.
  • Degree in Science, Engineering, or Construction.
  • NEBOSH Diploma or European equivalent, and membership of IOSH (Chartered).
  • Extensive knowledge of national and international health and safety standards, including CDM regulations.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a regulated and unionised environment.

  • Experience in the nuclear or highly regulated sectors.
  • Knowledge of nuclear safety standards and site licensing regulations.
  • Proven influence and negotiation skills at senior levels.

Working Pattern / Contract Details

This is a senior leadership role based on a construction site, with flexible working arrangements to support operational needs. Salary is competitive, with a strong benefits package aligned with senior industry standards.
