Exciting Leadership Opportunity: Head of Highways and Transportation

35 Hours p/w, Initial 3 Months whilst carrying out permanent recruitment

Role Summary

We are seeking a strategic and visionary Head of Highways and Transportation to join our Client's team on a contract basis. This key leadership role has been created to support the organisation's commitment to developing a well-managed, modern, and safe transport network. The position is vital in shaping the future of mobility, safety, and public space within the borough. Offering an inspiring and impactful challenge, this role provides the chance to lead transformative projects that benefit both local residents and the wider community.

  • Lead the strategic planning and delivery of highways and transportation services, ensuring alignment with broader organisational goals.
  • Oversee the management, maintenance, and improvement of the borough's highway assets and infrastructure.
  • Develop and implement policies and standards related to transport safety, sustainable travel, and active lifestyles.
  • Manage transportation planning, including development control, travel demand management, and road safety education initiatives.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver capital improvement programmes, infrastructure projects, and service enhancements.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with elected members, partner agencies, residents, and stakeholders to influence and improve transport-related outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and best practices across all aspects of highways and transportation.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven leadership experience in high-level highways and transportation management.
  • Extensive knowledge of urban transport systems, asset management, and infrastructure delivery.
  • Strong track record of leading large-scale projects within complex operational environments.
  • Ability to build credible relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Depth of understanding of transport safety, sustainability initiatives, and community engagement.
  • Sound financial acumen, including experience with budget and resource management.
  • Political awareness and the ability to navigate organisational change effectively.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience working within local government or similar public sector organisations.
  • Knowledge of current legislation, policies, and innovations in transport and highways.
  • Demonstrated experience in influencing policy development and strategic decision-making.
  • A background in promoting sustainable and healthier transportation modes.
