About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader to join us as Head of Housing Investment and Assets for a 12-month period.
Applications are welcome from colleagues interested in a secondment opportunity, subject to agreement from their current manager.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the council's housing delivery, asset management, housing strategy and compliance functions, helping to shape the future of housing in York.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for delivering new affordable and zero-carbon homes
- Maintaining and improving existing housing assets
- Driving service improvement across the housing portfolio
- Meeting the Housing Regulator requirements for a C1
The role will also play a key part in responding to the recent inspectors’ report, putting in place the necessary plans and driving their delivery. I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
