Head of Human Resources

Construction & Engineering

Location: London

Compensation: Competitive salary, comprehensive benefits package and bonus


A leading UK construction and engineering business is seeking an experienced Head of HR to lead its people function and support its continued growth and development.

The Head of HR will provide strategic and operational leadership across the full HR function, working closely with Directors, Managing Directors and senior managers to ensure the organisation has the people, capability and leadership required to deliver its business objectives.

This is a broad senior HR role encompassing people strategy, employee relations, workforce planning, recruitment, talent management, reward, performance, learning and development, organisational change, employee engagement and HR compliance.

Key Responsibilities

People Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement the People Strategy in alignment with the organisation’s business objectives and growth plans.
  • Act as a trusted HR adviser to Directors, Managing Directors and senior management.
  • Lead workforce planning to ensure the organisation has the appropriate resources, skills and capability to meet current and future requirements.
  • Provide HR insight and data-driven recommendations to support business decision-making.
  • Contribute to the wider strategic direction of the organisation as a member of the senior leadership community.

  • Lead the delivery of HR across the full employee lifecycle.
  • Ensure HR policies, procedures and practices remain legally compliant, commercially appropriate and aligned with business requirements.
  • Provide leadership on complex employee relations matters, including disciplinary, grievance, absence and performance management.
  • Identify and manage employment risk and provide appropriate guidance on complex people matters.
  • Maintain compliance with employment legislation, right-to-work requirements, workforce assurance and internal governance standards.

Talent, Recruitment & Development

  • Lead recruitment and resourcing strategies to attract and retain high-quality talent.
  • Develop and implement succession planning and talent management programmes.
  • Oversee learning and development initiatives across the organisation.
  • Support leadership development and strengthen management capability.
  • Identify future capability requirements and develop appropriate people solutions.

Culture & Engagement

  • Support and develop a strong and consistent culture across the organisation.
  • Lead employee engagement initiatives and associated action plans.
  • Support organisational change and transformation programmes.
  • Promote diversity, equity and inclusion across the organisation.
  • Develop initiatives that strengthen the overall employee experience.

HR Team Leadership

  • Lead, develop and mentor the HR team.
  • Set clear objectives, performance standards and development plans.
  • Ensure the HR function operates efficiently and provides a consistent, high-quality service to the wider business.
  • Develop the capability and effectiveness of the HR team as the organisation continues to grow.

Experience & Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • Significant experience in a senior HR leadership position.
  • Strong knowledge of UK employment law and extensive employee relations experience.
  • Experience within construction, engineering, infrastructure or a similarly operational environment.
  • A proven ability to work effectively with senior leaders and influence business decisions.
  • Experience across workforce planning, talent management and succession planning.
  • Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of the relationship between people strategy and business performance.
  • Experience leading and developing HR teams.
  • Strong communication, coaching and stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to analyse HR data, identify trends and provide evidence-based recommendations.
  • CIPD Level 7 qualification, with Chartered Member or Fellow status preferred.
