The Role

As Head of Infrastructure & IT Operations, you will lead and develop our Infrastructure and Service Desk teams, ensuring the stability, performance, and security of Scan’s internal IT systems across multiple sites and our datacentre.

Reporting to the Director of IT and working alongside other technology leaders, you will play a key role in shaping technical strategy, improving operational maturity, and supporting long-term business growth.

This is a leadership role with hands-on technical involvement. You will lead a growing team, oversee critical systems, drive operational improvements, and remain actively involved in complex projects and escalations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Infrastructure and Service Desk teams
  • Define and manage SLAs, KPIs, and service metrics
  • Lead major incident response and post-incident reviews
  • Coordinate on-call rota and escalation processes
  • Drive operational maturity through process improvement and standardisation
  • Oversee change management to ensure safe and controlled delivery
  • Establish and enforce documentation standards

Infrastructure Management

  • Oversee on-premise infrastructure across multiple sites and datacentre environments
  • Manage enterprise networking, firewall, and wireless infrastructure
  • Maintain virtualisation platforms and server environments
  • Support identity services, directory platforms, and core business systems
  • Lead capacity planning to support business growth and demand
  • Own and regularly test disaster recovery and business continuity plans
  • Support hardware lifecycle management and infrastructure modernisation

Service Delivery & Tooling

  • Improve Service Desk efficiency, capability, and service quality
  • Oversee ticketing systems and operational tooling
  • Ensure monitoring, alerting, and visibility are effective
  • Identify and implement automation opportunities
  • Support procurement, supplier management, and contract renewals
  • Contribute to infrastructure budgeting and cost optimisation

Security & Compliance

  • Work closely with Information Security to maintain compliance and best practices
  • Ensure infrastructure is maintained in line with security standards
  • Support security initiatives, audits, and remediation activities

Projects & Future Technology

  • Lead or contribute to key infrastructure projects and improvements
  • Drive modernisation across identity, endpoint management, and access controls
  • Support datacentre, network, and platform evolution
  • Research and recommend new technologies and solutions

Collaboration

  • Work closely with development, security, and business teams
  • Align infrastructure capabilities with organisational goals

The Ideal Candidate

You are an experienced infrastructure leader comfortable balancing people management, hands-on technical work, and strategic improvement.

Experience & Skills

  • 8+ years in infrastructure engineering
  • 3+ years in a leadership or management role
  • Strong experience in multi-site, on-premise environments
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Virtualisation platforms (e.g. VMware, Proxmox)
    • Windows and Linux server administration
    • Identity platforms and Microsoft 365 environments
    • Networking (switching, routing, wireless)
    • Backup and monitoring solutions
  • Strong incident management and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience leading service desk or IT operations teams
  • Ability to deliver projects end-to-end
  • Strong stakeholder communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience with enterprise storage and server platforms
  • Experience improving documentation and operational frameworks
  • Experience with endpoint or device management solutions
  • Experience in high-availability or security-focused environments

Working Pattern

9:00am–5:30pm
On-call rota participation (escalation level)
Fully on-site (Bolton HQ)
