Our Client
Mackie Myers has partnered with a leading private healthcare provider to appoint a Head of Internal Audit. Operating across a large national network of sites, the business has recently taken the strategic decision to establish an in-house Internal Audit function to strengthen governance, enhance risk oversight and provide greater assurance across the organisation.
The Role
This is a rare opportunity to build and lead an Internal Audit function from the ground up within a complex, highly regulated and multi-site environment. Reporting to senior executive leadership, with direct exposure to the Audit Committee, the Head of Internal Audit will be responsible for developing the Internal Audit strategy, delivering a risk-based audit plan and establishing a high-performing team capable of providing independent assurance across the business.
The role offers significant visibility and influence, with responsibility for evaluating governance, risk management and internal controls across a broad range of operational, financial, regulatory and technology risks. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Internal Audit leader seeking the challenge of creating a best-in-class function, or a high-calibre deputy ready to step into a first Head of Internal Audit position.
Main Duties
- Establish and lead the organisation's Internal Audit function, developing the strategy, methodology and operating model.
- Design and deliver a risk-based Internal Audit plan aligned to the organisation's strategic objectives and risk profile.
- Build, develop and lead a high-performing Internal Audit team, utilising specialist co-source support where appropriate.
- Provide independent assurance to Executive leadership and the Audit Committee on the effectiveness of governance, risk management and internal controls.
- Partner with operational and functional leaders across a large multi-site estate, providing constructive challenge and practical recommendations.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of financial, operational, regulatory and compliance controls.
- Lead reviews across key risk areas including cyber security, technology risk, system implementations and business transformation programmes.
- Support the ongoing enhancement of enterprise risk management and governance frameworks.
- Deliver clear and insightful reporting to senior stakeholders, influencing business decision-making and driving continuous improvement.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
