Role Description
The Head of Legal and Business Affairs will lead all legal and commercial activities for BBC Maestro, acting as the primary advisor on legal risk, compliance, and business strategy. This contract role is based in London with a hybrid working model, combining office collaboration with some work-from-home flexibility.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

- Negotiating and drafting contracts with instructors, partners, and suppliers
- Overseeing rights acquisition and licensing for course content
- Ensuring compliance with media, IP, data protection, and consumer laws
The role will manage relationships with external counsel, set and maintain legal policies and frameworks, and support senior leadership in structuring deals and partnerships. The Head of Legal and Business Affairs will also work closely with production, product, marketing, and finance teams to enable efficient operations while protecting the company’s legal and commercial interests.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in media, entertainment, or digital content law, including intellectual property, rights management, and licensing.
- Strong background in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements, including talent, production, technology, and partnership contracts.
- Knowledge of UK and EU regulatory frameworks relevant to online learning, data protection (including GDPR), consumer protection, and e-commerce.
- Experience advising senior leadership on legal risk, business strategy, and governance, with the ability to balance commercial goals and compliance.
- Demonstrated skills in stakeholder management, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and clear, concise communication of complex legal issues.
- Ability to design and implement legal processes, policies, and templates that support scalable growth in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
- Qualified solicitor or barrister (or equivalent legal qualification) with significant post-qualification experience; in-house experience in a content, tech, or education company is advantageous.
- Comfort working in a hybrid London-based role, with strong self-management, discretion, and commitment to ethical, inclusive business practices.
