Films for Humanity
Films for Humanity is a London film studio making powerful short films for small charities, free of charge. As we register our charity in 2027, we need a legal and governance lead to help us build on strong foundations. 3–5 hours a week, remote-friendly.
What difference will you make?
As Head of Legal & Governance, you will play a transformational role in shaping the future of Films for Humanity. Your guidance will ensure that our charity registration is completed smoothly, securely and in full compliance with regulatory standards, giving our board and Founder the confidence to grow our mission responsibly.
Your expertise will protect the organisation at every level from reviewing actor and extras contracts, to ensuring our filming releases, documentation and production processes are legally sound. This directly strengthens the safety, integrity and professionalism of every film we create.
Your leadership in governance will allow us to build a strong, transparent structure across our CIC and our charity that supports long-term growth, credibility and trust with beneficiaries, funders and partners. Many funders only support registered charities, so your work will directly open the door to new funding. Because of your support, we will be able to expand our impact, scale our film education programmes, and deliver more socially meaningful films with full legal assurance.
In short, your contribution will safeguard our creative work, empower our board, and ensure that Films for Humanity can confidently pursue its mission creating films that educate, inspire and change lives.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a self-starter someone who spots risks early, gives clear and practical advice, and gets things done without waiting to be asked. Our founder leads the creative direction; you will lead our legal and governance framework, with the freedom and trust to shape it your way.

Most important
- A qualified solicitor, barrister or legal professional (practising, non-practising or recently retired), or a senior governance professional
- Knowledge of charity law and governance, ideally including charity registration with the Charity Commission, CIOs or CICs
- A proven self-starter who can work independently, set their own priorities and deliver on what they commit to
- Clear, practical advice able to explain legal points simply and help a small organisation act on them
Also valuable
- Experience in media, entertainment or intellectual property law (contracts, rights, releases, music licensing)
- Knowledge of safeguarding, data protection (GDPR) and employment or volunteer law
- The ability to build a small network of pro bono legal support
- Confidence using a CRM or shared digital tools to keep documents and decisions organised
- A calm, collaborative approach, and a commitment to protecting the people and stories we work with
You do not need to have been a trustee before; we will give you a full induction. We warmly welcome applicants with lived experience of the issues our films address, and people from backgrounds under-represented in law, film and media.

What will you be doing?
Films for Humanity has produced six films since 2019, on mental health, domestic violence, drunk driving, kindness, Black history and conversion therapy. In 2026 we rebranded from Filming for Humanity and are now forming a five-person leadership board for 2027 a Head of Legal & Governance, a Head of Marketing, a Head of Grants, a Head of Brand & Industry Partnerships and a Head of Education & Community Partnerships, working alongside our founder and creative director.
2027 is a defining year we are registering a charity alongside our existing Community Interest Company (CIC). Your leadership will ensure our legal framework is strong, compliant and forward-thinking. Key responsibilities include

Charity Registration & Governance
- Guiding our charity registration with the Charity Commission, from constitution to submission
- Reviewing our CIC's Articles of Association and by-laws, and keeping them fit for purpose
- Setting clear governance between the CIC and the charity, including conflicts of interest and how funds move between them
- Supporting trustee onboarding, governance structures and policy creation
- Reviewing safeguarding policies, risk registers and operating procedures
- Advising the Founder on best-practice governance and long-term organisational structure
Film Production Legal
- Drafting and reviewing contracts for actors, extras, crew, locations and service providers
- Overseeing rights, releases, NDAs, music licensing and copyright permissions
- Reviewing filming consent forms, child protection protocols and production insurance
- Ensuring all documentation aligns with industry standards and charity law
Contracts & Commercial Documents
- Reviewing and advising on partnership, sponsorship and collaboration agreements, and MOUs
- Ensuring legal compliance across marketing, distribution and promotional activities, including data protection
You will also build a small network of pro bono legal support for specialist questions, and join one online board meeting a month (60–90 minutes).
How our structure works
The CIC runs paid productions for larger organisations; the charity will deliver our free films for small charities and our schools programme. You will sit on the CIC's advisory board from day one and be invited to become a founding trustee of the charity once it is registered. We will keep the two roles clearly separated, and you will never be asked to act for one organisation at the expense of the other.
