Head of Machine Learning Research & Intelligence
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Head of Machine Learning Research & Intelligence based in United Kingdom.
As Head of Machine Learning Research & Intelligence, you will define and drive the research vision behind an advanced AI platform designed to automate complex digital workflows. This is a highly strategic and hands-on leadership role where you will shape the intelligence, reasoning, and long-term evolution of cutting-edge machine learning systems used at scale. Working closely with product and engineering teams, you will influence the direction of AI capabilities while setting high standards for research quality, system reliability, and technical excellence. This opportunity is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-moving environments, enjoys solving complex challenges, and is passionate about building AI systems that deliver measurable real-world impact.
Accountabilities
- Define and execute the research strategy for core AI intelligence, including reasoning, planning, memory, context representation, and orchestration capabilities.
- Lead technical decisions on model architecture, determining when to build proprietary solutions or leverage state-of-the-art open-source and commercial models.
- Design and maintain robust evaluation frameworks to measure system quality, safety, reliability, long-term performance, and real-world effectiveness.
- Establish and oversee AI alignment, safety, and guardrail strategies to ensure responsible and dependable system behavior.
- Explore and integrate advanced machine learning approaches such as retrieval-augmented training, mixture-of-experts, model distillation, multimodal AI, and multi-agent systems.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to shape product intelligence and translate research into scalable production capabilities.
- Set high standards for technical excellence, research rigor, and engineering judgment across machine learning initiatives.

Requirements
- Extensive experience designing, building, and deploying production-grade machine learning systems.
- Deep expertise in evaluating model performance, understanding failure modes, and making informed architectural decisions with long-term impact.
- Strong hands-on experience with Python, PyTorch and/or JAX, as well as GPU-based training and inference environments.
- Demonstrated ability to balance research innovation with practical product delivery and real-world system performance.
- Experience working with advanced AI techniques, including large language models, retrieval systems, orchestration frameworks, or multimodal architectures.
- Strong analytical thinking, excellent problem-solving abilities, and the confidence to make high-impact decisions in evolving environments.
- High level of ownership, autonomy, and entrepreneurial mindset with a focus on execution and measurable outcomes.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across research, engineering, and product teams.
