About the Job
We are recruiting for a Head of Monetary Policy based in our London or Darlington Office. This is an opportunity to lead the team responsible for developing HM Treasury’s thinking and advice for the Chancellor on macroeconomic policy.
This role sits at the heart of economic policymaking, leading HM Treasury's work on monetary policy and supporting engagement with the Bank of England. You will provide advice to ministers and senior officials on some of the most important macroeconomic issues facing the UK, while leading a high-performing team in a fast-paced and high-profile environment.
Key Accountabilities
- Advising the Chancellor, Special Advisers and the Treasury’s Executive Management Board (EMB) on the evolution of the UK’s monetary policy framework, exploring policy options for the remit of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to support the delivery of the government’s economic objectives, and the implications of trends.
- Advising the Chancellor and EMB on UK monetary policy developments, including changes in the stance of monetary policy and the consequences for the government’s economic and fiscal objectives.
- Ensuring the coordination of monetary and fiscal policy by supporting the Chief Economic Advisor in their role as Treasury representative to the MPC and the Chancellor’s discussions with the Governor of the Bank of England.
- Leading the branch’s analysis on the economic and operational implications of monetary policy decisions, and potential future monetary policy tools.
- Supporting the Treasury’s Chief Economic Advisor in appointing external members to the MPC. This involves designing and running a fair, open and competitive recruitment process.
- Developing and maintaining engagement with the Bank of England staff.
- Leading and developing a small team, providing clear direction, support and opportunities for growth.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
