Head of Non-Life

The Head of Non-Life position is held by a senior general insurance actuary responsible for leading and growing Broadstone’s Non-Life consulting business. Broadstone’s Non-Life consulting team provides actuarial and risk consulting services to general insurers and other insurance market participants in the UK and internationally.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of the IAR Division, the role contributes to the development of the overall IAR strategy and is accountable for setting and delivering the Non-Life strategy, business plan, and business development targets within that framework. The role combines strategic and commercial leadership with senior client delivery, technical oversight, and leadership of the Non-Life consulting team.

As a member of the IAR Leadership Team, the Head of Non-Life will also contribute to the leadership, governance, and commercial development of the wider IAR business.

Requirements

The postholder must have extensive knowledge of the UK general insurance market and regulatory regime. Preferably, they will hold a current IFoA Non-Life practising certificate and have the experience and standing required to act as an SMF20 Chief Actuary for Broadstone’s clients.

Business Leadership

  • As an active member of the IAR Leadership team, contribute to the strategic direction, leadership, governance, and market profile of Broadstone’s wider Insurance Consulting business.
  • Business planning for the Non-Life Consulting team, in conjunction with the Head of IAR.
  • Be accountable for delivery against the agreed business plan:
    • Take delegated ownership of the Non-Life P&L.
    • Be accountable for delivering the business plan including revenue, new business generation, and profitability targets.
    • Deliver sustainable, revenue-led, and profitable growth from new and existing clients.
    • Ensure that the Non-Life team operates efficiently across all of its activity.
    • Ensure the Broadstone Non-Life consulting team has the appropriate skills, systems, tools, and capacity to execute against the agreed strategy, within the agreed budgets.
    • Generate new business opportunities and secure engagements.
    • Maintain an understanding of non-life market developments and competitor offerings. Identify future growth opportunities in the Non-Life sector and collaborate across IAR and wider Broadstone Divisions for relevant cross-service opportunities.
    • Be a recognised industry leader in the UK Non-Life sector, building Broadstone’s profile through continued networking, industry presentations, and promoting thought leadership.

Technical and Professional Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership across Broadstone’s Non-Life consulting services, including reserving, pricing, capital, risk management, reinsurance, regulatory reporting, actuarial function support, and independent actuarial review.
  • Preferably, hold a current IFOA Non-Life practising certificate and act as an SMF20 Chief Actuary for Broadstone’s clients where appointed, discharging the associated regulatory and professional responsibilities.
  • Maintain and implement appropriate technical governance, quality assurance, peer review, regulatory, and professional standards across the Non-Life consulting team and support those across the wider IAR practice.
  • Sponsor appropriate development and controlled use of models, data analytics, automation, and technology within the team and wider IAR Division.

Business Development and Client Relationship Management

  • Carry out personal business development and provide business development leadership to the Non-Life consulting team, resulting in personal and team-led new business generation from new and existing clients.
  • Continually develop strong brand presence and recognition of the IAR and Broadstone brands by promoting thought leadership, leveraging PR, and creative agencies as appropriate.
  • Maintain and expand strong relationships with the wider insurance community.
  • Maintain a broad, strategic view of the Non-Life client portfolio and relationships.
  • Maintain oversight of and manage client satisfaction, relationship strength, retention, profitability, concentration risk, and opportunities across the Non-Life client portfolio.
  • Establish and maintain commercially appropriate pricing and fee structures, consistent with IAR’s overall commercial framework.

People Leadership and Management

  • Provide clear leadership to the Non-Life consulting team and more widely across IAR, reinforcing Broadstone’s values and resulting in an engaged and high-performing team.
  • Set clear targets for achievement and performance expectations for the Non-Life consulting team.
  • Manage the Non-Life Consulting team, including team engagement, performance management, recruitment, retention, coaching, training, and career development.
