Help us create a better future, quicker

As Head of Operational Trading within Global Energy Management, you'll lead the team responsible for optimising the short-term route to market for ScottishPower Renewables generation and Customer Business demand. This is a highly influential leadership role that sits at the heart of the UK's evolving energy system, helping to maximise the value of renewable generation while supporting energy security and the transition to Net Zero.

You'll also play a key role in developing balancing and ancillary services opportunities, managing critical relationships with the National Energy System Operator and influencing regulatory developments that impact both the business and the wider energy market. Leading a team of traders and analysts, you'll drive innovation, support digital and AI-enabled trading initiatives, and foster a strong culture of compliance, risk management and continuous improvement.

What You'll Be Doing

  • You'll lead all aspects of Operational Trading activities, ensuring ScottishPower's renewable generation and customer demand portfolios are effectively positioned within short-term electricity markets.
  • You'll identify and develop new revenue streams within balancing and ancillary services markets, helping to strengthen the commercial case for future renewable and flexible energy assets while delivering significant value across the portfolio.
  • You'll work closely with internal and external stakeholders (globally) to develop commercial opportunities, negotiate complex balancing services arrangements and influence market developments.
  • You'll provide strategic leadership to the Operational Trading team, driving performance, developing capability and delivering management reporting and insights that support decision-making at senior leadership level.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
