Job Purpose
As Head of Programmes & Operations, you will be a key member of our Senior Management Team, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to ensure the smooth and effective running of all operational aspects of the organisation. This role requires a forward-thinking, strategic leader who thrives on innovation, collaboration, and impact.
Your responsibilities will span strategic leadership, operational excellence, performance management, and business development, all while embedding a culture of inclusion and excellence across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Design and implement operational strategies, plans, and processes to drive growth, innovation, and excellence.
- Integrate AI and technology-driven systems to streamline workflows and improve efficiency.
- Collaborate with the CEO and senior leaders to translate strategic goals into actionable plans.
Operational Management
- Lead and oversee day-to-day operations across IT, Programmes, Business Support, HR, and Finance, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and strategic objectives.
- Define, implement, and track operational KPIs, using data to drive performance, accountability, and informed decision-making.
- Ensure organisational compliance with all regulatory, legal, and ethical standards, proactively managing risk and governance requirements.
Performance and Team Management
- Set, track, and drive performance against clear team and individual goals, ensuring accountability and consistent delivery.
- Build and embed a high-performing, inclusive culture, setting clear expectations and leading by example.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing development, ensuring teams are structured, capable, and set up for success.

Business Development and Fundraising
- Identify and pursue new opportunities for partnerships, fundraising, and revenue generation.
- Support the CEO in building and maintaining strategic relationships with key stakeholders.
- Play a key role in grant applications, corporate sponsorships, and donor engagement efforts.
Data-Driven Decision-Making
- Leverage data and performance metrics to assess the impact of programmes and initiatives.
- Identify areas for improvement and implement evidence-based solutions.
Innovation and Technology
- Introduce and maintain AI/technology-driven solutions to enhance operations and programme delivery.
- Stay ahead of emerging trends and technologies, applying them to drive organisational success.
Skills and Qualifications
We are seeking a visionary leader who is passionate about making a difference:
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Proven experience in a similar role, preferably within a nonprofit, social enterprise, or mission-driven organisation.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with a track record of driving cultural and organisational change.
- Strong understanding of core business functions, including HR, Finance, and Operations.
- Excellent organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills, including public speaking.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic plans.
- Experience in integrating AI or technology-driven systems to optimise efficiency.
- Proficiency in data analysis and using metrics for decision-making.
- Knowledge of IT systems, business infrastructure, and MS Office applications.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
- Experience in fundraising, grant management, or working within the charity sector.
- Familiarity with the challenges faced by underrepresented communities and a passion for addressing economic inequalities.
- A BSc/BA in Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field (MSc/MBA preferred).

This is a full-time, primarily office-based role based at The AVOCADO Foundation’s London office and AVOCADO HUB. The postholder will be expected to work on-site between three and five days per week, depending on organisational and operational requirements.
The HUB operates between 8am and 8pm, Monday to Friday, and working hours may be arranged within this operating window according to the needs of the role. Some evening and occasional weekend work may also be required to support programmes, events, and other organisational commitments.
The job description may be updated from time to time with other duties and responsibilities to meet the evolving needs of the organisation. It is not intended to be rigid or inflexible but should be regarded as providing guidelines within which you are expected to work.
The Charity operates an entire shutdown each year in August and December and requires all employees to take annual leave to cover this period of time. This period is not in addition to annual leave entitlement, so employees need to retain sufficient annual leave to cover this period. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that sufficient annual leave entitlement remains each year available for this period. Employees who do not have sufficient entitlement remaining should speak to their line manager about other available options.
Probation period: Five months.
