About British Rowing

The Role

This senior leadership role provides strategic oversight across risk management, health and safety, external partnerships, and advocacy.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the role will help British Rowing anticipate and manage strategic, operational, and financial risks while strengthening relationships with waterway authorities, sector bodies, and political stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Risk Management & Governance

  • Develop and embed a practical, modern risk culture across strategic, operational, reputational, and financial domains.
  • Monitor emerging risks, establish proportionate controls, and report updates to the CEO, Senior Executive Team, and Board committees.
  • Drive strategic decision-making by balancing commercial ambition with governance, resilience, and sustainability.

  • Act as British Rowing’s competent adviser under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
  • Provide practical and proportionate health and safety guidance.
  • Lead crisis response planning and oversee serious incident investigations.
  • Manage relationships with insurers and claims handlers.
  • Build staff and volunteer capability to manage risk and make informed, safe decisions.

Strategic Partnerships & Advocacy

  • Build constructive partnerships with key bodies, including the Environment Agency, Canal & River Trust, and Port of London Authority.
  • Lead evidence-based advocacy with political and sector stakeholders.
  • Protect and improve the operating environment for rowing.
  • Promote rowing’s contribution to community health, inclusion, waterway access, and environmental stewardship.

Qualifications

  • Senior leadership experience shaping strategy and risk culture in complex organisations.
  • Proven track record in stakeholder engagement, policy advocacy, or external affairs.
  • Strong analytical and strategic decision-making skills with sound commercial judgement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience advising C-suite and Board-level stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional membership or qualification in risk management, such as IRM.
  • Health and safety qualification, such as IOSH or NEBOSH.
  • Background in sport, leisure, public sector, membership bodies, or maritime/waterways sectors.

Compensation

£60,000 per annum

Time Commitment

4 days per week
