An exciting job share opportunity has arisen for an experienced and highly motivated leader to work alongside the current Head of Quality & Governance. This pivotal role will lead and manage all quality, governance, regulatory compliance, and accreditation activities across the Pathology, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, patient-centred services that meet the highest professional and regulatory standards.
The post holder will provide strategic leadership and expert advice to Pathology, DSCSS directorate, Corporate Teams, and external organisations on all aspects of Pathology led IT systems, pathology education and staff development, quality management, clinical governance, risk management, accreditation, and regulatory compliance.
As the Department’s professional lead for quality and governance, you will be responsible for providing robust assurance that Pathology services operate in accordance with the relevant standards for regulatory and accreditation compliance, national guidance, professional requirements, and Health Board policies.
Main duties of the job
The Head of Quality and Governance is responsible for leading the quality, governance, risk management, patient safety and compliance agenda across Pathology services. The role provides strategic and operational leadership to ensure services meet regulatory, accreditation and statutory requirements, including Healthcare Standards and UKAS accreditation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and monitoring quality and performance frameworks
- Leading audit, risk, incident and complaints management processes
- Overseeing investigations and ensuring organisational learning drives continuous improvement
- Providing expert governance advice to senior managers and clinicians
- Leading policy development, information governance, health and safety
- Managing relationships with regulatory and external bodies

The role also has responsibility for:
- Workforce leadership, staff development, training, budget management, research governance, patient and public involvement, and quality improvement initiatives
- Contributing to strategic planning
- Providing assurance to the Directorate
- Promoting a culture of safety, openness, accountability and continuous improvement throughout Pathology services

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSC or equivalent qualification in Biomedical sciences
- HPC registration as a biomedical scientist
- MSc in a Biomedical science related discipline or equivalent through in-depth experience/post graduate level course / and extensive relevant experience
- Post grad level qualification in management or evidence of continuous professional development
Desirable criteria
- IOSHH or comparable h&s qualification
- Qualification in clinical governance
- Root cause analysis training
- Good practice training
- Good IT skills, evidenced through training
