This isn’t just about economics and analysis – it’s about influencing the future of price controls, developing innovative charging methodologies and helping create the regulatory frameworks that will support the transition to a low‑carbon energy system.
Working alongside the Director of Regulation and the wider Regulatory Strategy leadership team, you’ll provide expert economic insight, challenge and thought leadership to support Cadent’s long‑term strategy. You’ll lead the development of economic analysis that informs future price controls, customer charging methodologies and new regulatory frameworks for emerging technologies such as hydrogen, blended gases and heat networks.
This is a highly visible leadership role with regular engagement across Cadent’s Executive Committee, Board, Ofgem, Government departments and industry stakeholders. You’ll help shape decisions that influence over £1.5bn of annual regulated expenditure and the future direction of the energy sector.
Why you’ll love this role:
- Future Price Control Strategy – Lead the economic analysis that shapes future regulatory price controls and cost assessment methodologies.
- Industry Influence – Build and maintain relationships with Ofgem, Government and industry stakeholders to influence future regulatory frameworks.
- Customer & Transportation Charging – Provide economic input to support the development of innovative charging methodologies that enable efficient and sustainable revenue recovery.
- Net Zero & Future Markets – Support the development of frameworks for hydrogen, blended gases, heat networks and future energy systems.
- Executive Visibility – Present insights and recommendations to senior leadership, ExCom and Board-level audiences.
- Thought Leadership – Develop compelling evidence, analysis and industry-leading positions that shape future policy and regulation.
- Strategic Impact – Play a key role in decisions that directly influence Cadent’s long-term strategy and regulatory performance.
What you’ll bring:
- Regulatory Economics Expertise – Strong experience in regulatory economics, pricing, charging methodologies or economic analysis within a regulated environment.
- Strategic Thinking – Ability to assess complex regulatory and commercial issues and translate them into practical business outcomes.
- Stakeholder Influence – Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders, regulators and industry bodies.
- Commercial Acumen – Strong understanding of business drivers, economic principles and regulatory incentives.
- Exceptional Communication Skills – Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly through reports, presentations and strategic papers.
- Thought Leadership Capability – Confidence to challenge existing approaches and develop innovative solutions.
- Relationship Building – Ability to build trusted relationships internally and externally to drive positive outcomes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
