The Opportunity
As Head of Risk & Compliance, you'll join at a pivotal moment for Tempcover. We're working to scale our proposition and deepen our activities in the temporary insurance space, building out a dedicated Risk & Compliance function within the business. You'll hold real regulatory accountability, holding Tempcover's SMF4 (Risk) and SMF16 (Compliance Oversight) Senior Management Functions (subject to FCA approval). This role has a clear trajectory: as the business scales and the function proves itself out, so does the opportunity to build and lead a team of your own.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll take full ownership of Risk & Compliance for Tempcover - from day-to-day advisory support through to Board-level risk governance. Day-to-day, that means:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
- Chairing and leading on our Business Risk Committee - overseeing the risk register and key risk indicators, and working with risk owners to make the judgement calls that keep us safely ahead of emerging risks.
- Acting as a trusted partner to Product, Marketing and Underwriting - giving timely, pragmatic feedback on new features, campaigns and customer journeys.
- Building and running a proactive compliance monitoring plan - reviewing our products and journeys before problems find us, and following mandatory actions through to closure.
- Owning our data protection and privacy programme, including data protection impact assessments.
- Leading our relationship with the regulator alongside business leaders as our market and scale increases.
- Championing Consumer Duty across the business and working with the business to ensure good customer outcomes.
- Growing the team as demand proves out - this is a hands-on, individual-contributor role today, with a clear path to build a function around you.
What We're Looking For
We want someone who's has or is ready to run a compliance and risk function before, who knows how to be a partner to the business, and who's genuinely excited to play a major role building out the function to meet the business’s ambitions for its next stage of growth.
You'll Bring
- Senior compliance/risk leadership experience in an FCA-regulated general insurance business - ideally as an SMF16 and/or SMF4 holder, or a clear step up into it.
- Practical, working knowledge of FCA frameworks (SYSC, ICOBS, PROD) and Consumer Duty - and the judgement to know the difference between proportionate compliance and box-ticking.
- Genuine motor or general insurance experience preferred.
- The experience to be Tempcover's face to the FCA, and the credibility to build trust quickly.
- A hands-on, builder mindset - comfortable doing the work yourself in year one, not just directing others.
- Strong stakeholder skills - equally comfortable partnering with Product and Marketing as briefing the Board.
