Head of School
The Head of School will lead the continued development and improvement of the school, ensuring that BFC School provides a high-quality, inclusive and aspirational education in which students feel safe, supported and able to thrive. The postholder will ensure the school continues to meet all Department for Education independent school requirements and maintains high standards of governance, safeguarding and educational quality.
The role will include responsibility for student recruitment, working in partnership with the Local Authority, secondary schools and other referral partners. The postholder will also manage the school’s delegated budget and resources, ensuring these are used effectively and sustainably to meet students’ needs and support the curriculum offer. They will play a key role in developing the school team and ensuring the right staffing structure and expertise are in place.
The Head of School will contribute to BFCCT’s wider strategic development by identifying opportunities to respond to local need, developing strong partnerships across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast, and working collaboratively with Local Authorities, schools, other education providers and key partners.
The successful candidate will bring strong strategic thinking, educational leadership and a commitment to improving outcomes for young people. They will have experience of senior leadership, an understanding of governance and accountability, and the ability to lead people and partnerships effectively.
Main Roles & Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & School Improvement
- Work closely with the Trust CEO, Senior Leadership Team, School Steering Group and Trustees to develop and deliver BFC School’s strategic vision, values and priorities.
- Provide clear strategic direction and ensure school improvement is evidence-informed, appropriately prioritised and focused on measurable impact.
- Lead self-evaluation and the development, implementation and review of the School Improvement Plan (SIP).
- Ensure clear ownership, accountability, monitoring and evaluation of agreed SIP priorities.
- Use evidence, data, quality assurance, research and pupil and stakeholder voice to identify strengths, areas for development and appropriate action.
- Monitor the effectiveness of policies, strategies and improvement activity, responding to emerging priorities.
- Drive growth and sustainability through effective pupil recruitment, attendance, engagement, retention and high-quality provision.
- Develop effective relationships with local authorities, schools and external agencies to support referrals, admissions and positive transitions.
- Monitor pupil numbers and referral trends to inform future planning and sustainability.
- Promote BFC School’s vision, values and impact to stakeholders and the wider community.
- Provide high-quality reports, presentations and assurance information to the CEO, School Steering Group and Trustees.
Leadership of Leaders & Staff Development
- Provide appropriate support, challenge and professional supervision, ensuring staff are accountable for the quality and impact of their work.
- Develop leadership capacity through coaching, mentoring, professional dialogue and effective delegation.
- Enable colleagues to take ownership of agreed whole-school and SIP priorities within their roles and capacity.
- Lead succession planning, leadership development, appraisal, performance management and professional development.
- Support colleagues to identify and pursue appropriate development and leadership opportunities.
- Promote collaboration across BFC School, the Trust and wider professional networks.
- Model high standards of professional conduct, reflective practice and collective responsibility.
- Promote a culture where staff feel supported, challenged and accountable for positive pupil outcomes.

Safeguarding & Child Protection
- Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), with lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection, including online safety.
- Provide strategic leadership of safeguarding, ensuring a strong, consistent and child-centred culture.
- Lead and coordinate the work of the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DDSLs), working effectively with the Trust Safeguarding Team and external agencies.
- Ensure safeguarding systems, policies, procedures, recording, training and quality assurance are robust, effective and compliant.
- Maintain oversight of safeguarding records, referrals, chronologies and actions, providing appropriate assurance to the CEO, SLT, School Steering Group and Trustees.
- Maintain a clear understanding of the school’s filtering and monitoring systems and processes, working closely with the school’s IT provider to ensure these are effective, appropriately managed and regularly reviewed.
- Ensure staff understand their safeguarding responsibilities and receive appropriate training and support.
- Ensure safeguarding practice reflects the specific needs and vulnerabilities of pupils attending BFC School and is continually reviewed and improved.
- Lead on complex safeguarding matters and work effectively with safeguarding partners and other agencies.
- Ensure DSL responsibilities align with current Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and other relevant statutory guidance.
Culture, Relationships, Behaviour & Attendance
- Provide strategic leadership of culture, relationships, behaviour, attendance and pupil engagement.
- Lead the day-to-day running of the school, promoting high expectations, inclusion, belonging and positive relational practice.
- Ensure whole-school approaches are understood, implemented consistently and evaluated effectively, recognising individual pupil needs and circumstances.
- Provide appropriate support, challenge and accountability to staff.
- Use attendance, behaviour, engagement, pupil voice and other evidence to evaluate impact and identify priorities.
- Work closely with the SENDCo and relevant staff where SEND, inclusion, reintegration or transition intersect with attendance, engagement or behaviour.
- Work with pupils, families and external agencies to address barriers to engagement and successful outcomes.
- Ensure expectations, routines and responses are applied consistently across BFC School.
Quality Assurance, Teaching, Learning & Organisational Leadership
- Maintain an accurate, evidence-informed understanding of the quality and effectiveness of provision across BFC School.
- Lead a coherent whole-school quality assurance cycle that supports improvement, professional development and accountability.
- Set clear expectations for the quality of provision, recognising the different needs and functions of the school.
- Strategically lead the development of teaching, curriculum, assessment and professional practice.
- Ensure the curriculum is delivered to a high standard, maximising pupil achievement and addressing educational disadvantage.
- Monitor pupil progress and ensure appropriate reporting to parents/carers and Trustees.
- Maintain a strong understanding of classroom practice and the pupil experience.
- Model high-quality teaching and relational practice, with high expectations for learning, engagement and progress.
- Undertake an appropriate teaching commitment, as determined by the CEO.
- Oversee SEND provision and ensure inclusive practice.
- Identify and address variations in quality and outcomes.
- Effectively deploy and develop staffing capacity, including recruitment, appraisal and workforce development.
- Lead the effective management of the school’s budget and financial resources, ensuring expenditure is well controlled, aligned to strategic priorities and supports long-term sustainability.
- Contribute to organisational planning, resource allocation and the management of change.
- Provide leadership in response to significant incidents, complex situations and emerging organisational priorities.
- Ensure effective systems support communication, accountability and organisational effectiveness.

Partnership, Trust & Governance
- Develop effective professional relationships with pupils, parents/carers, staff, the Trust and external partners.
- Maintain strong communication with parents and carers and act as the initial point of contact for significant parental concerns.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across Blackpool FC Community Trust.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with the Local Authority, mainstream schools, Alternative Provision partners and relevant external agencies.
- Represent BFC School and the Trust professionally within local and wider partnerships.
- Support the CEO in providing Trustees with appropriate information, evaluation, assurance and reporting.
- Attend Trust Board, School Steering Group and other governance meetings as required.
- Provide accurate, timely and meaningful reports and presentations to governance bodies.
- Identify partnership opportunities that enhance outcomes and opportunities for pupils.
- Promote understanding of BFC School’s contribution to the wider education system and local community.
- Protect and enhance the school’s reputation through high standards of professional practice.
Pupil-Centred Leadership
- Place the safety, wellbeing, inclusion and educational outcomes of pupils at the centre of decision-making.
- Ensure pupil voice and experience inform school improvement and decision-making.
- Promote high aspirations and positive destinations for all pupils.
- Ensure BFC School’s Alternative Provision offer responds effectively to individual needs and barriers to mainstream education.
- Promote effective transition, reintegration and onward progression.
- Ensure pupils are treated with dignity, respect and consistency.
- Champion equality, inclusion and opportunity across BFC School.
- Work with staff, families and external partners to remove barriers to learning and engagement.
