Head of Software Engineering

Salary - Negotiable

Location: London/Hybrid

An established financial services organisation is looking for an experienced Head of Software Engineering to lead its software engineering and technology delivery capability, supporting the business through a period of continued growth and digital transformation.

You’ll lead engineering, solution architecture, and technical delivery, ensuring the organisation’s applications and platforms are secure, scalable, resilient, and aligned to business priorities.

The Opportunity

A key focus will be the modernisation of an established technology estate, including a legacy VB.NET/MVC and SQL environment, modernising the existing.NET and Azure platform, and evolving the user experience towards a modern React-based UI.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead software engineering, development standards, quality assurance, and release management.
  • Define and evolve the application architecture and technical strategy.
  • Lead the modernisation of a legacy VB.NET/MVC and SQL estate, alongside the wider.NET and Azure platform.
  • Drive the transition towards a modern React-based UI and contemporary application architecture.
  • Translate product requirements into robust, scalable technology solutions.
  • Establish development governance, coding standards, and engineering best practice.
  • Lead buy-vs-build decisions in partnership with Product.
  • Own the integration strategy across core platforms, third-party suppliers, and internal systems.
  • Ensure platforms are scalable, reliable, maintainable, and secure by design.
  • Manage technical debt and drive investment in platform sustainability.
  • Support AI, automation, and digital transformation initiatives through strong technical leadership.
  • Develop and mentor high-performing engineering and technical teams.
  • Manage technology suppliers and implementation partners where required.

We’re looking for a credible senior technology leader with strong software engineering and architecture experience who can balance strategic thinking with practical delivery.

  • Depth of experience across technology leadership, software engineering, or architecture.
  • Proven experience leading software engineering and development teams.
  • Strong knowledge of .NET, Azure, SQL, and modern software development practices.
  • Experience modernising legacy VB.NET/MVC applications and technology estates.
  • Experience with React or modern frontend technologies and evolving application architectures.
  • Knowledge of DevOps, CI/CD, and modern delivery methodologies.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Financial services experience would be highly desirable.
