JSS are hiring for a Head of Tax for a leading construction company based in Surrey (supporting 3 days per week remote working)

This is a permanent full-time position paying circa £100,000-£120,000 plus car allowance, private medical cover and bonus up to 40%.

The Head of Tax will take the lead on the tax affairs of the company as part of the finance senior leadership team, and managing a small team of 2 direct reports.

He or she will take ownership of all taxes that affect the company (direct and indirect) and will have a varied tax leadership role encompassing tax advisory, compliance, business partnering, tax strategy, tax risk management and project work.

Responsibilities include:

Tax Compliance

  • Prepare, review and submit the Group's Corporation Tax returns and supporting computations.
  • Prepare and submit the PAYE Settlement Agreement (PSA).
  • Consolidate, review and submit the Group VAT return, Joint Venture and standalone VAT returns.
  • Prepare and submit Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) returns.
  • Complete and submit Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) returns.
  • Calculate Qualifying Infrastructure Project Expenditure (QUIPS) and prepare Residential Property Developer Tax (RPDT) notifications.

Tax Advisory

  • Provide practical and commercially focused tax advice to divisions across the business.
  • Advise on VAT treatment for construction projects, land and property transactions, and other commercial activities.
  • Support divisions with Options to Tax and prepare and submit Option to Tax notifications to HMRC.
  • Provide guidance on VAT and CIS queries, technical issues and error corrections.

Tax Governance & Risk Management

  • Ensure the Group maintains a robust tax governance framework and complies with all relevant UK tax legislation.
  • Manage tax-related audit queries and coordinate responses to internal and external auditors.
  • Identify and mitigate tax risks while ensuring appropriate internal controls are maintained.
  • Monitor legislative changes and assess their impact on the Group.

The company is looking for a qualified tax professional (ACA / ACCA / CTA / ICAS or equivalent) with experience across both direct and indirect taxes.

The successful candidate will be a strong communicator and stakeholder manager, capable of taking on a role that is both strategic and hands-on.

Experience in the construction sector or related sectors is desirable, but not required. Similarly experience with partial exemption would be beneficial but is not mandatory.
