Who we are
TLX is a specialist UK materials technology business that has spent over three decades engineering high-performance materials for the toughest applications on earth — from cold-climate shelters used by the UN during the Kosovo crisis, to the insulation behind the London 2012 Olympic Pool, the Zaha Hadid-designed Chanel Museum, and stadiums built for the Qatar World Cup. Today we're Europe's largest manufacturer of multifoil insulation, and through TLX Cargo we're taking that same engineering rigour into pharmaceutical cold chain logistics — designing and manufacturing thermal cover systems that keep life-saving medicines within a few precious degrees, all the way from factory to patient.
We're a business built on real, demonstrated performance rather than marketing claims — our products are trusted by major international companies precisely because they've been proven to work under pressure.
The opportunity
We're appointing a Head of Technical to help drive TLX Cargo through the Company's five-year growth plan. This is a genuinely broad, hands-on technical leadership role at the centre of the business — you'll be the technical knowledge base the whole company leans on, working closely with the Managing Director, the Technical Director and the Head of Finance.
You'll lead your own department, but just as importantly you'll lead from the middle — first among equals, a problem-solver people come to when something needs figuring out. Day to day that could mean anything from a machine breakdown on the factory floor, to a query on incoming raw materials, to a design challenge on a new pharmaceutical cover system. You'll sit at the top of a quality system that ensures everything we make matches what we claim it does — because in cold chain pharma, that's not optional.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
This role is primarily focused on TLX Cargo products, and it's a job for someone who wants to help build something, not just maintain it — someone young at heart, comfortable in a can-do, roll-up-your-sleeves environment, and genuinely excited to join us on the next stage of our journey.
What you'll be doing
- Acting as the technical authority for TLX Cargo, supporting the Managing Director, Technical Director and Head of Finance on technical decisions across the business.
- Owning and evolving the quality system that verifies our thermal cover systems perform exactly as claimed — critical for pharmaceutical cold chain customers.
- Leading the technical/quality department, prioritising and managing a genuinely varied workload across product, process and people.
- Providing hands-on support to the factory on machine breakdowns, process issues and production troubleshooting.
- Assessing and approving incoming raw materials against specification.
- Contributing to the design and development of new and improved cargo cover products.
- Working cross-functionally as a problem-solver, jumping in wherever technical input is needed to keep the business moving.

What we're looking for
- A strong technical/engineering background, ideally in materials, manufacturing, packaging or a related industrial discipline.
- Experience operating within a formal quality system (e.g. ISO 9001) in a manufacturing environment; pharmaceutical, cold chain or packaging sector experience is a strong plus.
- A genuine hands-on, practical problem-solver — comfortable moving between strategic input and getting stuck in on the factory floor.
- Confidence operating at senior level with a Managing Director, Technical Director and Head of Finance, without needing a large team or heavy hierarchy around you.
- Someone who thrives in a fast-moving, growing SME rather than a large corporate structure.
- Based within a commutable distance (around one hour) of our factory in Blackrod, Lancashire, or willing to relocate.
What we offer
- A genuinely broad, senior technical role with real influence over the direction of the business.
- The chance to work on products that protect life-saving medicines, for a company already trusted on landmark global projects.
- Direct access to the Managing Director and Technical Director — no red tape.
- Competitive salary and benefits, dependent on experience.
