Head of Technology & Design
Role Summary
We are seeking a dynamic leader and teacher committed to working as part of a team dedicated to raising standards. The Head of Department will collaborate with a link member of the Senior Leadership team to track, monitor, and evaluate the department’s curriculum model.
Responsibilities
Health and Safety
- Take lead responsibility for health and safety within all Technology rooms and workshops in line with EA guidance and relevant legislation.
- Ensure that all practical activities are supported by appropriate and regularly reviewed risk assessments.
- Ensure compliance with regulations relating to machinery and equipment, including maintenance, safe operation, and staff competence.
- Oversee the safe storage, handling, and disposal of materials in accordance with COSHH regulations.
- Ensure all staff and pupils are appropriately trained in safe working practices and the correct use of equipment and PPE.
- Monitor and maintain a safe working environment through regular audits and inspections.
- Investigate and report accidents/incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Manage health and safety documentation and ensure it is inspection-ready.
Leadership and Management
- Be responsible for the organization and management of a subject department in accordance with the policies, procedures, and guidelines agreed by school leadership.
- Formulate, implement, monitor, and evaluate Departmental Schemes of Work.
- Develop, implement, and review regularly a department improvement plan in line with whole school priorities as outlined in the school development plan.
- Ensure adequate resources are in place to deliver efficiently and effectively the curriculum.
- Monitor and support the work of a team of Teaching and non-Teaching staff, creating a purposeful working atmosphere in which every member of staff and their work is valued.
- Establish high expectations for all pupils, monitoring their progress, and ensuring that appropriate guidance and intervention strategies are implemented and reviewed for improvement.
- Undertake appropriate assessment measures (formative and summative) that aid pupil progress, including formal exam sessions.
- Plan and organize the curriculum for the subject/related subjects throughout the school.
- Provide guidance to colleagues on content, methodology, and resources.
- Work collaboratively with their link Senior Leader to ensure appropriate target setting and sharing of effective practice.
- Create a team identity within the department, holding departmental meetings which are purposeful, structured, recorded, tasks delegated, followed up, and evaluated.
- Prioritize, monitor, and review quality teaching and learning within the Department through regular lesson observations.
- Liaise with the additional educational needs team to ensure active implementation of strategies to support all pupils to achieve.
- Establish a coherent system of celebrating student achievement, creating the required ethos of mutual respect and understanding.
- Share with the Senior Leadership Team the responsibility for the professional development of staff as appropriate to their needs.
- Support and advise fellow colleagues in disciplinary action when appropriate and in accordance with the procedures established in School policy.
- Undertake and provide evidence of self-evaluation at departmental and individual basis on a regular basis.
- Complete a yearly analysis of departmental results, identify trends, strategies for improvement, and priority students using data and benchmarking to monitor progress in every child’s learning.
- Lead learning within the department by ensuring there is regular monitoring of on-going improvement, using regular data to track student performance and underachievement.
- Use pupil voice to monitor and evaluate classroom practice using questionnaires, surveys, and verbal feedback.
- Review the qualifications on offer on an annual basis and change if required, to meet the ever-changing profile needs of students.
- Liaise with primary schools and community groups, and coordinate activities to develop strong relationships within the community.
- Teach other subjects as required by the needs of the school.
- Effectively line manage technical support staff and oversee the efficient procurement, maintenance, and allocation of departmental resources and equipment.
- Ensure that all practical activities are appropriately adapted to meet the needs of pupils with additional educational needs, promoting safe and inclusive participation for all learners.
- Promote sustainable practices within the department, including the responsible use of materials and the development of environmentally conscious design approaches.
- Ensure the department is fully prepared for internal and external quality assurance processes, including compliance with ETI expectations and contribution to whole-school self-evaluation.
- Lead the effective integration of digital technologies, including CAD/CAM and e-learning tools, to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment within the department.
- Lead and promote STEM across the department and wider school by fostering strong cross-curricular links with Science and Mathematics, modelling collaborative practice, and supporting the planning and delivery of primary liaison activities that enhance pupil engagement and contribute to school improvement.

General Professional Duties
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to them, including the setting and marking of work.
- Assessing, recording, and reporting on the development, progress, and attainment of pupils.
- Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to them.
- Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers.
- Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils.
- Communicating and co-operating with such persons or bodies outside the school as may be approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors.
- Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.
- Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports, and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils.
- Participating, if required, in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
- Reviewing from time to time their methods of teaching and programmes of work.
- Participating in arrangements for their further training and professional development as a teacher.
- Advising and co-operating with the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment, and pastoral arrangements.
- Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with the policies of the employing authority and safeguarding their health and safety.
- Participating in meetings at the school which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organisation of the school.
- Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations.
- Contributing to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers, including the induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
- Coordinating or managing the work of other teachers.
- Taking such part as may be required of them in the review, development, and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation, and pastoral functions of the school.
- Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to such duties as described above, including the management or supervision of persons providing support for the teachers in the school and the ordering and allocation of equipment and materials.
- Registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils, whether these duties are to be performed before, during, or after school sessions.
- Supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential Criteria
- Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
- Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Technology or similar STEM related subject and hold or be willing to undertake relevant qualifications relating to workshop practice as recognised by the Department of Education (NI) to meet health and safety requirements.
- Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
- Have a minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching Technology or related subjects to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 within the last 7 years.
- Proven track record of outstanding teaching including performance outcomes at Key Stage 4.
- Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
- Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
- Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
- The ability to undertake self-evaluation on an individual and department basis and utilise these results to positively influence whole school improvement (provide evidence in practice).
- Ability to lead Technology subject support interventions for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
- Ability to deal appropriately with pupils and parents.
- Ability to offer subject-specific extra-curricular clubs.
- Ability to lead teams, build leadership capacity, and promote professional learning (provide evidence in practice).
- Evidence of how their experience and approach to work reflect the School’s Values/ethos.
Desirable Criteria
- Minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching Carpentry or similar vocational subjects at Key Stage 4 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
- Demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom approaches to provide support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs and/or EAL.
- Demonstrable experience of assisting with and/or co-ordinating an area of the curriculum.
- Experience of organising relevant STEM Community/Industry Links.
