Head of Transactional Banking Technology

At Investec, we are building a differentiated Corporate Banking proposition in the UK, and transactional banking sits right at the heart of it. It is the part of banking our clients touch every single day, and we want it to feel modern, dependable and genuinely useful. To get there, we are creating a dedicated Transactional Banking Technology capability, and we are looking for the leader who will shape it from the ground up.

As Head of Transactional Banking Technology, you will lead and develop a focused engineering squad responsible for delivering Corporate Transactional Banking features on our core banking platform. You will integrate this with specialist teams covering payments processing, cards, digital channels, onboarding and client enablement, and a central part of your role is bringing those threads together so that client and operational journeys work beautifully end to end.

This is a chance to lead a high performing technology team with strong ownership, accountability and delivery discipline. You will have significant influence over a flagship growth initiative, close exposure to senior business and technology leadership, and the scope to embed AI-enabled engineering practices from day one, driving innovation through practical AI application and modern platform thinking in transactional banking. If you are energised by building something new, and by rethinking how transactional banking products are built, delivered and experienced, this is a role with real room to leave a mark.

What will I be doing?

  • Establish and lead a dedicated engineering squad for Corporate Transactional Banking, with clear ownership, a strong operating rhythm and a technology roadmap aligned to the Corporate Banking strategy, architecture and our launch priorities.
  • Own the delivery of transactional banking features on the core banking platform, including accounts, fees, overdrafts, servicing and related transactional capabilities.
  • Drive delivery discipline across planning, sequencing, engineering quality, testing, release management and operational readiness, working within a thin platform model that keeps you aligned to the core banking architecture.
  • Act as the technology integrator across payments, digital channels, onboarding, cards, client enablement, operations and servicing teams, promoting API-first, reusable integration patterns and avoiding duplicated capability.
  • Set high standards for engineering quality, resilience, security, observability and maintainability, embedding modern practices across agile delivery, DevOps, CI/CD, test automation and cloud-native engineering, and partnering with enterprise architecture on pragmatic, scalable design.
  • Recruit, develop and lead an outcome-focused team with the right mix of technical capability, product understanding and delivery discipline, working across our UK, South Africa, Mumbai and other delivery locations.
  • Embed AI-enabled tooling across the engineering lifecycle, from AI-assisted coding and testing to documentation and operational support, and use AI, automation and data-driven insight to reimagine traditional transactional banking journeys, always responsibly and in line with enterprise and regulatory standards.
  • Act as the senior technology partner to Transactional Banking and Corporate Banking leaders, translating business strategy into clear priorities and communicating progress, trade-offs, risks and dependencies with clarity.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a senior, credible and commercially aware technology leader: hands-on enough to understand the delivery detail, with the experience and credibility to act as the senior technology partner to Transactional and Corporate Banking Leaders. You will be pragmatic and decisive, comfortable making trade-offs, collaborative and calm under pressure, and genuinely passionate about building modern banking experiences and high-performing engineering teams.

What's essential

  • Demonstrable experience in UK Corporate Banking technology environments, gained in a bank, challenger bank or banking-focused FinTech.
  • Strong Corporate Transactional Banking domain knowledge, covering business current accounts, payments integration, client servicing, fees, overdrafts and related banking journeys.
  • A track record of delivering transactional banking, current account, cash management or corporate digital banking capabilities.
  • Experience leading engineering teams, technology domains or delivery squads within financial services, including complex, multi-platform solutions in regulated environments, with the ability to build, motivate and scale teams.
  • Experience working with or integrating into core banking platforms, and comfort operating in a federated platform environment with multiple accountable platform owners.
  • A strong understanding of API-driven integration, platform-based architecture, cloud-native engineering, DevOps, CI/CD, test automation, observability and operational resilience, with the confidence to challenge and guide architecture decisions while staying delivery-focused.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and credibility from executives through to engineers, paired with a commercial, outcome-focused mindset and comfort creating structure in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
  • Practical experience of using AI-enabled tools or practices to improve engineering productivity, quality or delivery outcomes, with the judgement to innovate responsibly in a regulated setting.

What's desirable

  • Hands-on exposure to Mambu, Finacle, Temenos, Thought Machine or similar core banking platforms.
  • Experience building new teams or standing up new technology capabilities from scratch.
  • Evidence of using AI to improve engineering productivity, delivery quality or client journeys.
  • A good understanding of Corporate Banking operating models and transaction banking propositions.
  • Strong curiosity about how AI is reshaping transactional banking and financial services delivery, and an eye for practical use cases that create measurable value.
