Head of Transport

Location: St Albans
Salary: Up to £55,000 + Benefits

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head of Transport to join a rapidly growing, family-owned business with a strong reputation for delivering exceptional customer service.

This is a key leadership position where you'll take full responsibility for the transport operation, leading a team of approximately 30 employees and driving operational excellence across the department. You'll play a pivotal role in developing people, improving performance and implementing strategic initiatives to support continued business growth.

This position offers genuine long-term career progression, with the opportunity to become part of the senior leadership team and influence the future direction of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, motivate and develop a transport team of approximately 30 employees.
  • Manage the day-to-day transport operation, ensuring vehicles and customer orders are planned and delivered efficiently.
  • Drive continuous improvement across productivity, service levels and operational performance.
  • Monitor and manage transport budgets, forecasts and operating costs.
  • Ensure compliance with all transport legislation, health & safety and company procedures.
  • Oversee transport planning, fleet utilisation and third-party logistics providers.
  • Work closely with warehouse and operational teams to ensure accurate and timely order fulfilment.
  • Review departmental performance through KPIs and implement improvements where required.
  • Support strategic business projects and operational change initiatives.
  • Develop and improve transport processes and routing systems.
  • Build strong working relationships across all departments and with external stakeholders.
  • Support senior leadership with operational planning and business objectives.

About You

We're looking for a hands-on, commercially aware transport leader who enjoys developing teams and improving operational performance.

To be successful you will have:

  • Previous experience in a Head of Transport, Transport Manager or Senior Transport Operations role.
  • Strong leadership experience managing large transport teams, including supervisors and first-line managers.
  • Extensive knowledge of transport operations, distribution and fleet management.
  • Experience within food distribution, FMCG or a fast-paced logistics environment would be highly advantageous.
  • Excellent understanding of transport compliance, health & safety and operational best practice.
  • Strong commercial awareness with experience managing budgets and controlling operational costs.
  • Experience working with third-party logistics providers and courier networks.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills.
  • A continuous improvement mindset with the ability to identify efficiencies and implement positive change.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
