Head of Transport
Location: St Albans
Salary: Up to £55,000 + Benefits
About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head of Transport to join a rapidly growing, family-owned business with a strong reputation for delivering exceptional customer service.
This is a key leadership position where you'll take full responsibility for the transport operation, leading a team of approximately 30 employees and driving operational excellence across the department. You'll play a pivotal role in developing people, improving performance and implementing strategic initiatives to support continued business growth.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead, motivate and develop a transport team of approximately 30 employees.
- Manage the day-to-day transport operation, ensuring vehicles and customer orders are planned and delivered efficiently.
- Drive continuous improvement across productivity, service levels and operational performance.
- Monitor and manage transport budgets, forecasts and operating costs.
- Ensure compliance with all transport legislation, health & safety and company procedures.
- Oversee transport planning, fleet utilisation and third-party logistics providers.
- Work closely with warehouse and operational teams to ensure accurate and timely order fulfilment.
- Review departmental performance through KPIs and implement improvements where required.
- Support strategic business projects and operational change initiatives.
- Develop and improve transport processes and routing systems.
- Build strong working relationships across all departments and with external stakeholders.
- Support senior leadership with operational planning and business objectives.

About You
We're looking for a hands-on, commercially aware transport leader who enjoys developing teams and improving operational performance.
To be successful you will have:
- Previous experience in a Head of Transport, Transport Manager or Senior Transport Operations role.
- Strong leadership experience managing large transport teams, including supervisors and first-line managers.
- Extensive knowledge of transport operations, distribution and fleet management.
- Experience within food distribution, FMCG or a fast-paced logistics environment would be highly advantageous.
- Excellent understanding of transport compliance, health & safety and operational best practice.
- Strong commercial awareness with experience managing budgets and controlling operational costs.
- Experience working with third-party logistics providers and courier networks.
- Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills.
- A continuous improvement mindset with the ability to identify efficiencies and implement positive change.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
