The Role

The Head of UK Regions & Strategic Channels is a senior leadership role reporting to the Head of Growth & Financing, HSBC Innovation Banking UK. The role owns the end-to-end UK Regions coverage strategy (outside of London) and is accountable for overall performance across regional client activity, including financial outcomes and the effective management of financial and non-financial risks. The remit spans Innovation Banking clients across all life stages—Early Stage, Venture-backed, and Corporate profiles—ensuring a consistent client experience and risk standards while tailoring coverage and proposition to regional ecosystem needs.

In addition, the role holder oversees Strategic Channels activity across London and the Regions, including targeted initiatives such as university spinouts acquisition, ensuring clear prioritisation, disciplined execution and measurable outcomes. The role will work in close coordination with London-based sector coverage teams to provide integrated client coverage, maximise cross-sell, and ensure a “one HSBC” face to market.

The role holder will coordinate closely with teams outside of Innovation Banking (including relevant HBUK Commercial Banking colleagues, Product, Risk, Compliance/Financial Crime, Operations and Marketing) to ensure coordinated market engagement, efficient client journeys, and strong risk and control outcomes.

A typical day may involve partnering with the Head of Growth & Financing and London sector heads on regional priorities, engaging ecosystem leaders and key regional clients, chairing pipeline and portfolio reviews across multiple sites, tracking strategic channel initiatives, and driving improvements to control effectiveness and operating model maturity.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Own UK Regions coverage strategy and execution (outside of London) for HSBC Innovation Banking UK, including definition of regional priorities, target ecosystems, coverage model and delivery roadmap, aligned to the wider UK coverage and growth strategy set by the Head of Growth & Financing.
  • Accountability for end-to-end performance of regional activity, including financial performance (revenue, balance sheet, returns), client outcomes and risk outcomes—ensuring growth is achieved in a controlled, sustainable and client-centric manner.
  • Leadership of relationship management and business development activity in the UK Regions, ensuring robust pipeline creation, disciplined origination, and high-quality relationship management for clients across all life stages.
  • Coordinate closely with London-based sector coverage teams to deliver joined-up client coverage, consistent sector messaging, effective handoffs and collaboration on complex opportunities—ensuring the best of HSBC Innovation Banking is brought to clients regardless of location.
  • Oversee Strategic Channels activity (London and Regions), including definition of channel strategy, prioritised initiatives and performance management. This includes targeted acquisition programmes such as university spinouts, as well as other ecosystem routes-to-market (e.g., accelerators, incubators, venture investors and intermediaries), as applicable.
  • Build and maintain strong external market presence across the UK innovation economy, acting as a senior representative for HSBC Innovation Banking in regional ecosystems and strategic channel partnerships; collaborate with Marketing to ensure a clear narrative, campaign strategy and events programme that support acquisition and brand.
  • Lead and develop multi-site teams, including line management of business development leads, relationship managers and strategic channels colleagues, setting clear expectations, driving performance, and role-modelling HSBC leadership behaviours in a distributed operating environment.
  • Enhance risk and control maturity across regional coverage and channels, partnering with 2LOD and other 1LOD teams to shape, develop and embed policy, process and controls.
  • Governance and disciplined execution: ensure consistent use of sales and relationship management processes, effective management information (MI), regular pipeline/portfolio forums, and timely issue identification, escalation and remediation.
  • Cross-boundary collaboration to deliver “one HSBC”: coordinate with HSBC teams outside Innovation Banking to ensure a coordinated and clear face to market across the UK, reducing duplication, improving client journeys and maximising collaboration outcomes.
  • Data-driven leadership: use data and insights to guide strategic choices and drive performance (e.g., regional pipeline health, conversion, portfolio returns, risk indicators, channel ROI, client experience signals).
  • Talent acquisition and development: ensure appropriate capability is in place across locations (industry expertise, product knowledge, credit and financial crime risk awareness); build succession plans, mentoring and mobility opportunities to strengthen long-term organisational resilience and diversity.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
