Head of Underwriting Controls Framework

Description
The Head of Underwriting Controls Framework at Asta leads the implementation and maintenance of Asta’s Underwriting Control Framework, ensuring that all controlled underwriting activities across managed syndicates operate within a robust, compliant and well-governed structure. This includes ownership of UCF documentation, oversight of key controls (exception reporting, authority frameworks, and documentation standards), and supporting Asta’s governance objectives by ensuring syndicates meet Lloyd’s underwriting requirements and maintain a disciplined, transparent underwriting environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversight and maintenance of the Underwriting Control Framework (UCF) for managed syndicates
- Review and oversight of underwriting governance documentation including Syndicate protocols, underwriting guidelines and other associated UCF documentation.
- Management and oversight of LOA issuance.
- Update the Head of Underwriting Oversight on syndicate control framework matters as necessary including key actions, issues or themes across managed syndicates.
- Escalation of UCF issues into the Asta governance framework e.g. AWG and SB and other governance forums as necessary.
- Oversight of underwriting compliance activities including exception reporting.
- Interrogate and where necessary enhance control-related MI.
- Ensure underwriting governance activities adhere to Lloyd’s Principle 1 and internal Asta underwriting governance processes.
- Lead team development within the Underwriting Controls function including people development and training.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Strong knowledge of the Lloyd's market essential. Syndicate operations, and managing agency governance knowledge, advantageous.
- Extensive experience in underwriting governance, underwriting oversight, or underwriting operations.
- Deep understanding of Underwriting Control Frameworks (UCFs) and associated governance structures.
- Experience reviewing & maintaining:
- Syndicate Protocols
- Underwriting Guidelines
- Delegated Authorities/Letters of Authority (LOAs) - essential
- Underwriting authorities and controls
- Good understanding of Lloyd's Principle 1 and relevant underwriting governance expectations.
- Experience overseeing underwriting compliance activities, controls testing, and exception management.
- Ability to identify control weaknesses, governance gaps, and operational risks and confident leading escalation processes.
- Strong stakeholder management skills; ability to be pragmatic and client-focused whilst being disciplined and thorough.
- People leadership skills, beneficial.
- ACII / Cert CII qualification, beneficial.
