Head of Underwriting Strategy & Performance
We are seeking a driven and analytical individual to help us enhance underwriting performance (gross and net), strengthen portfolio diversification, and reduce volatility, whilst navigating a softening market.
The role will act as a Business Partner to the Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) and a trusted advisor to the broader underwriting leadership team.
The Head of Underwriting Strategy & Performance will also support coordination of cross-functional initiatives involving underwriting, pricing, claims, actuarial, exposure management, and reinsurance teams, support strategic planning, business reviews, and Board / Executive Committee presentations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Responsibilities

Improve underwriting net profitability & Portfolio Balance
- Analyse underwriting performance to identify areas for improvement and profitability enhancement.
- Help optimize reinsurance purchasing and efficient line size deployment.
- Support pricing and underwriting teams with data-driven insights for risk selection.
- Help define portfolio positioning throughout the market cycle, including expansion, preservation, and remediation strategies for individual lines of business.
- Support in achieving the right portfolio composition and balance.

Performance monitoring & Portfolio Steering
Support the CUO in:
- Owning and continuously enhancing the underwriting performance framework.
- Coordinating performance reviews and supporting the ongoing development of Underwriting Committees.
- Collaborating in developing Key Performance Indicators and tolerances to identify emerging risks and opportunities.
- Working with underwriting teams to ensure agreed actions are implemented and their impact measured.

Strategic Projects & Innovations
- Partner with data, actuarial, and pricing teams to design and develop the analytical tools, dashboards, and capabilities required to support underwriting performance management, portfolio steering, and SCOR's market positioning.
- Collaborate with underwriting and leadership teams to ensure data-driven decision-making in fluctuating market conditions.
- Support the strategic initiatives which directly impact and further SBS and CF ambitions, as we enter a new strategic cycle (e.g., Augmented underwriting, Algorithmic underwriting, etc.).
QUALIFICATIONS
Required experience & competencies
- Actuarial background is an advantage, but not a must.
- Experience in insurance and underwriting.
- Proven track record of applying commercial acumen for concrete business outcomes.
- Strong numeric skills and ability to interpret complex data analysis.
- Highly organized with strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Good team player, ability to develop networks, internally and externally.
- Ability to interact with stakeholders both locally in London and globally in a multicultural environment.

Required Education
- University Degree.
- Insurance or financial-related studies.
