The Role
The Head of VCRM (Venture Capital Relationship Management) & Growth Platform is a senior leadership role reporting to the Head of Growth & Financing, HSBC Innovation Banking UK. The role is responsible for deepening and expanding HSBC Innovation Banking’s relationships with venture capital firms and other investors, including their Partners and Principals, ensuring HSBC Innovation Banking is the first point of call for banking and broader support across the innovation economy.
The role leads a team of senior colleagues who spend significant time in market with investors and at key ecosystem events, identifying and converting opportunities for HSBC Innovation Banking to work with investors at both fund level (in partnership with the Strategic Fund Solutions team) and at portfolio company level (in partnership with the Innovation, Technology and Life Sciences coverage teams).
In addition, the role oversees colleagues driving specific Growth Platform initiatives—such as the Founder Success programme—to maximise the impact HSBC Innovation Banking has on clients and prospects alike, improving client experience, increasing engagement and supporting sustainable growth.
This is a highly visible role requiring a strong market presence and ideally an established network amongst the VC community. At its heart, this is a senior relationship management leadership position: accountable for commercial outcomes, team performance and disciplined execution, using a data-driven approach to evidence impact and continuously improve. The role holder will be comfortable operating at the most senior levels internally and externally, partnering closely across HSBC to ensure a coordinated, high-quality and risk-aware approach to investor coverage and growth initiatives.
The role encompasses and has the following principal responsibilities:
- Own and execute the Venture Capital & Investor coverage strategy for HSBC Innovation Banking UK, aligned to the wider growth strategy set by the Head of Growth & Financing, including prioritisation of target funds/investors, engagement model, coverage cadence and success metrics and partnering with Global Innovation Banking colleagues to ensure seamless and consistent relationship management for funds deploying capital across multiple IVB geographies.
- Deepen senior investor relationships (VCs and other investors), including building direct relationships with Partners and Principals, and overseeing VCRM coverage ensuring HSBC Innovation Banking is positioned as the trusted, go-to banking partner across the investor lifecycle (fund formation, deployment, portfolio support and exits where applicable).
- Lead and develop the VCRM team, setting clear expectations and accountabilities, coaching senior colleagues, and embedding a high-performance culture that balances market impact with disciplined execution.
- Origination and opportunity conversion: drive identification, qualification and conversion of opportunities sourced via investor relationships and ecosystem activity, ensuring robust tracking from introduction through to mandate/win.
- Fund-level collaboration: coordinate closely with the Strategic Fund Solutions team to originate and deliver fund-level solutions and engagements, ensuring effective joint coverage, clear ownership, and consistent client experience.
- Portfolio company collaboration: coordinate closely with Innovation, Technology and Life Sciences sector/coverage teams to convert investor-led introductions into portfolio company relationships and outcomes, ensuring seamless handoffs and “one team” client coverage.
- Oversee Growth Platform initiatives (e.g., Founder Success), including defining objectives, target audiences, delivery approach, governance, and measurement of impact on acquisition, engagement, brand and client outcomes.
- Market presence and ecosystem leadership: represent HSBC Innovation Banking at key VC and innovation economy events; build and maintain a strong external profile; partner with Marketing to shape investor-facing narratives, campaigns and event strategy.
- Governance, MI and discipline: establish and run effective routines (pipeline reviews, investor coverage forums, initiative governance) supported by clear management information that evidences performance, ROI and outcomes.
- Cross-boundary collaboration to deliver “one HSBC”: coordinate closely with relevant HSBC teams outside Innovation Banking (e.g. Private Bank, Asset Management, Investment Banking and broader HSBC coverage teams as appropriate) to ensure a coordinated face to market, efficient client journeys and consistent standards.
- Enhance risk and control maturity for investor-related activity, partnering with 2LOD and other 1LOD teams to shape, develop and embed policy, process and controls—supporting appropriate governance across referral activity, onboarding standards, client communications, and conduct expectations.
- Talent and succession: build a diverse talent pipeline, identify capability gaps, and support recruitment, development and retention to ensure the VCRM & Growth Platform team has the skills and capacity to deliver the strategy.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
