Head of Year
Start date: November 2026
37 Hours per week - 8.30 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Thursday (4.00 pm on Friday)
Term Time + 3 Week (PD Days + 2 weeks for administration hours)
Scale 6 (£16.35 - £17.47 per hour)
Per Annum (£28,396 - £30,341) dependent on experience and length of service
Burton Borough School is seeking an inspiring, committed and highly motivated Head of Year to join our pastoral team at an exciting time in our school's journey.
Located in the market town of Newport, on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border, Burton Borough is a vibrant and inclusive school of approximately 1,200 students, with easy access to Shrewsbury, Stafford, Telford and Wolverhampton. As Head of Year, you will play a pivotal role in making this ambition a reality. Working under the guidance of the Assistant Principal for Student Culture and Behaviour, you will lead and champion your year group, building strong relationships with students and families and ensuring that every young person feels known, valued, supported and challenged to achieve their very best.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about young people and understands the difference that excellent pastoral care, high expectations and strong relationships can make. You will be a visible and positive presence within school, celebrating success, addressing barriers to learning and working collaboratively with colleagues, families and external agencies to ensure students flourish.
You will:
- Take responsibility for leading a year group, fostering a positive, inclusive and aspirational culture.
- Build strong, professional relationships with students, ensuring they feel known, supported and able to succeed.
- Provide high-quality pastoral support, guidance and targeted interventions.
- Maintain high expectations for students' behaviour, attendance, punctuality and engagement with learning.
- Work closely with students and families to identify and overcome barriers to learning.
- Develop positive partnerships with parents, carers, colleagues and relevant external agencies.
- Celebrate students' achievements and encourage them to make a positive contribution to school life and the wider community.
- Provide appropriate pastoral and administrative support in response to the needs of students and the school.

- Can build trusting and effective relationships with students and families.
- Communicates confidently and sensitively, including when navigating challenging situations.
- Is proactive, organised and able to balance the varied demands of a busy pastoral role.
- Understands the importance of attendance, behaviour and positive engagement in securing successful outcomes for young people.
