Health & Safety Advisor – Highways & Civils
Location: South East
Salary: £30,000 – £40,000 + Benefits
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
Benefits: Company Vehicle, Pension, Health Plan, Funded Development, Paid Half-Day Fridays
Are you a Health & Safety Advisor who prefers being out on site, working with operational teams and actually improving safety rather than spending the entire week behind a desk?
We are recruiting for a hands-on H&S Advisor / Site Inspector to join an established highways and civil engineering contractor operating across the South East.
This is a practical, site-focused position where you'll work closely with operational teams across live highways and construction projects, carrying out inspections, identifying risks, investigating incidents and helping ensure excellent safety standards are maintained as the business continues to grow.
The company has achieved zero RIDDOR incidents and zero LTIs over the past three years, so you'll be joining an organisation where Health & Safety is already taken seriously. The challenge is to maintain those standards while continuing to improve how safety is managed on site.
What you'll be doing
As Health & Safety Advisor, you'll be responsible for:
- Carrying out regular site inspections and safety audits across highways and civil engineering projects
- Working directly with site teams, supervisors and management to improve working practices
- Identifying hazards, unsafe behaviours and opportunities to improve site safety
- Confidently challenging unsafe practices where required
- Supporting teams with RAMS, safe systems of work and risk management
- Investigating incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions
- Producing clear inspection, investigation and Health & Safety reports
- Monitoring compliance with relevant Health, Safety and Environmental requirements
- Supporting the continued development of a positive, practical safety culture
- Providing advice and guidance to operational teams
- Recognising good practice and helping embed consistent standards across projects

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
